My housemate has a vacuum but is not always in when I want to use it (it is often in her room) and we have stairs that are close to impossible to do with it (as it is a Henry and not very easy to manoeuvre). So I want my own anyway and just trying to decide if it pays off.

I haven’t voted partly because of that and also because I don’t know. I think in general it’s worth paying more to get a powerful one because shitty little hoovers that suck up nothing are a pain. I don’t know how to tell it it will have good suction though. I need a try before you buy experience in a hoover shop and then I’ll know for sure what the ultimate hoover. I think what I’m saying is that at least for me, suction power is way more of a deal-breaker than cordlessness.

it seems like cordless tends to have less suction as a general rule but the reviews for the one I am looking at seem fine.
it's not expensive for a vacuum but still twice as much as a regular one that I could buy instead. I don't buy stuff to last me a lifetime but am keen for it to last for long enough to pay off as well as being keen on not killing the planet etc.

Think it depends and it's not a blanket yes/no thing. Do you have pets or shed a lot yourself? If so, you want something stronger so go corded. If you have no creatures and you don't shed much yourself cordless would probably work fine.

That said, if you'd never use one with a cord because too much hassle, one you'll use even if it has less suction would be better than none at all.

Honestly batteries aren't necessarily better than using electricity. Battery disposal can be an environmental issue too. *shrugs*

I don't know but I'm leaning towards 'worth it' because you do (currently) have access to a corded vacuum for if there's anything that a cordless one can't quite do, and from what I've heard they have improved a lot. Also I'd probably be better at cleaning my house if I wasn't busy falling over and swearing at vacuum cables so yno.

Camden, I think Lana meant that she doesn't want to get something that she'll have to throw away after like a year, rather than thinking cordless is better environmentally, cos like you still use the same power charging a cordless vacuum?

Didn't even mention but main purpose of getting my own vacuum at all and one that is less of a faff is so that I clean at all!!!

And can confirm that is what I meant re sustainability!!
It needs way longer for charging than it runs for but I'd rather not need to replace it a lot if it easily breaks beyond repair but there's only so much I'm currently willing to spend on it even if a significantly more expensive one might last longer.

We've recently purchased a cordless Shark and it's the best vacuum I've ever owned.

Love my shark upright. Stairs are easy as it all lifts off and becomes a wand and hand held hoover. Hate my mums cordless. It zooms around really fast because it's so lightweight so you end up going over 3 times because you miss bits, it's also hopeless on carpets because there's no spinning bar to lift the debris as you hoover. I prefer upright hoover to a Henry style one.
