What do you call the place you take your rubbish and recycling? Also tea.
As the title says! What do you call that place that you drive to and dispose of household waste? My friend says that everyone else he knows calls it the tip, whereas I've always called it the dump so now I'm curious!
Also keen for the American opinion here- do you have such a place? If so, what is it called?
Surely you at least call it "The skips", or do you have a really tiny HWRC?

Hurrah, I successfully summoned an American!
So it's this big outdoor place with multiple huge skips and other containers where you can recycle various things, lots of which can't be recycled in the recycling bin at home. You drive around, stopping at whichever skips you need and chuck your stuff into it.
My local one has sections for textiles, electricals, mattresses, wood, garden waste, cardboard, general waste and other stuff I don't remember. Even though you can dispose of general waste and cardboard at home, it's only one bin of each per fortnight so if you're moving house or something you might have too much. Same with garden waste and you also have to pay to be part of the garden waste collection service, so you might want to take it to the dump instead.
It has employees who help tell you where to put stuff and they also do some sorting and I think operate a big compression machine for the general waste. At my local dump, there is a little hut with an office for the employees which when I visited on Friday, was BLASTING classic tunes from the 90s, though I don't think this is a compulsory component of any household waste recycling centre.
Oh. I have never heard of this. If it is a thing here I have no idea what it would be called or how to find it. Thus it is legit possible it is a thing here too, just not where I live and/or not that I have ever heard of.
Where I live we have one big wheely bin for garbage that we put out at the street every week, one big wheely bin for recycling that we put out at the street every other week, then certain parts of the year they collect yard waste as long as it's either in a labelled bin or a big paper bag. They do that on the same day they collect recycling. We don't pay a fee for any of that but I assume it's paid for in taxes as I do live in city limits. It's slightly different where my mom lives, in a suburb in that she has to buy stickers for her garbage bin, and her garbage and recycling wheely bins are done every week, and her yard waste can be loose or even in plastic bags. At the fancy neighborhood where I work at the horse barn they have giant wheely bins for garbage and recycling, but they always leave them at their house. On pickup day, a pickup truck comes down their driveway, collects the bins, takes them to the street or someplace nearby where they get dumped into trucks, then brings their bins back. It's kind of wild.
I know some larger apartment complexes have dumpsters where you're supposed to put your garbage, but that also sounds different than what you're talking about.
For big garbage like furniture or mattresses you have to sign up for special large waste collection and they tell you a date in the future where it will be collected, so you put it out at the street that day. I think there's a limit of 5 things at a time for that and I do not think there is a fee.
So yea. Unsure if just where I live is odd, I am just unaware, or it's not a thing here period. Unhelpful I suppose.

Please do not give me virtual hugs unless you are only using the hug function on threads. Thanks.
You can't always keep it separate.
This is happening, this is part of you.
Two different places! Trash goes to the dump and recycling goes to the recycling center. For most people though the trucks come pick both up from our houses for us.
Forget the risk and take the fall if it's what you want it's worth it all

It's my impression that that occurs there in the UK as well, but this is for odd stuff that doesn't go in normal garbage or recycling. Someone please correct me if wrong.

Camden, thank you for your information! I have some questions!
1) Is 'yard waste' what we call garden waste - grass clippings and stuff?
2) So what would you do if your iron* broke and you needed to dispose of it?
* I didn't put kettle here, because apparently you don't routinely own kettles in the US???

So can you personally drive to the dump or the recycle 'center' to dispose of things, or is that only for the trucks to go? I would also like to ask you question 2 from above!
