Protecting old scars from sun damage?

Hello,

I have many scars (all over 2 years old and fading gradually but still very visible) which I always cover up because I live in a relatively cold country. However, I plan on doing a lot of travelling soon, mostly to places where it is very hot and I will have to wear revealing clothing (which I don't feel ashamed about doing anymore).

I was hoping for advice on how to prevent my scars from darkening in the sun, as I've heard that scars are more susceptible to tanning and sun damage, thus increasing the risk of skin cancer. Is applying SPF religiously enough to combat this? Do I have anything to worry about if I walk around in short sleeves and skirts so long as I've applied SPF? I'm actually optimistic about life now, so I don't want to die early of skin cancer!

Are you able to talk to your GP about this? I don't actually know anything about protecting scars but using SPF would of course be better than nothing. I hope someone can offer you some advice. Enjoy your travelling. :)

I put it down on paper and then the ghost does not ache so much.

Don't try to calm the storm, calm yourself, the storm will pass.

You didn't come this far just to come this far.

I would think probably factor 50. That's what I use.

I find the skin around my scars tans, and my scars just look much whiter! They're 10 years old, so I don't know if that makes a difference. I have a few on my arms that used to burn quite easily but now they tend to tan a little. I just use the SPF I use on the rest of my skin. I guess it depends on how sensitive your scars are?
