Scar treatment

Sorry if this has been covered before, I have searched but couldn't find a response to my specific question.

15 years ago I was self harming. I've stopped completely for 15 years but have some smal white slightly raised scars. In the grand scheme of things their not that as but they are noticeable enough for me to never show my arms. I've tired all the creams and some non invasive stuff but nothing worked. Only thing left to consider is a skin graft. I know it'll leave more scar tissue overall but it would make a world of difference to be able to have my arms out with a scar that looks like an accident.

I doubt very much the NHS would be able to help me and to be honest if I save I can afford it myself. Does anyone know how I would go about speaking to a plastic surgeon? I'm worried they'll just dismiss me / judge me, you know, the usual!

And has anyone had skin grafts? What do they look like a few years down the line?

Hope this is okay to post.

Unfortunately not many people on this site have had this procedure as the vast majority of members are still SIING and therefore it's pointless. I have heard that from ex members that the nhs do sometimes fund scar revision treatment. I would book an appointment with your gp who would let you know the options available.

Alternatively if you can't afford to go private should the nhs fail there's a service by the Red Cross which offers scar covering makeup. It may make you feel better if your scars are less noticeable. I don't know if you have tried it.

Sorry I couldn't give you a direct answer to your questions it's just that it's been several days without a reply and I wanted to reply. I know how annoying it's to make the effort to post and not receive a single response.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. I've tried the makeup but still feel too conscious about it to go bear arms. Think i'll save up some money and try and find someone private who could help. Maybe I can post updates on here to let people know about my experience.

Grafts tend to be noticable too - it's not like replacing the area with perfect skin. One cosmetic surgical option is scar revision, where the original scar is revised and reclosed with a view to it healing better. This is only viable for a small number of scars, and again privately. There are other cosmetic treatments, but they will be costly and are generally not suitable for a large area or large number of scars.

I appreciate it's not very helpful in your case, but in the first two years, significant benefits can be made from use of silicone gel - I once used it on year old scars and it made a noticeable difference within a few weeks, and it still works well during the time the scar is pink/changing.

The product does work. Normally such serum aren't trusted by customers, but I bought it only for one reason - dermalmd's product. It has helped me minimize my acne upto 80% with regular use,I also try to take lots of water & with good diet including fibrous fruits & vegetables,
Also always Cleanse & Tone your skin for optimum results & i've seen my pores reducing which a lot of products can't do except dermalmd's scar serum
