Okies...
Hello everyone
I think I want to start a martial art, Kenpo, or Taekwondo. I heard that excersice is good, releases endorphins, I know I'd love it, could be a great release. But I don't think I'd be ready to give up cutting, woulld I need to stop? I mean all the moving, getting kicked in places where I might still be hurt. Flexibility. My cuts might open, while training. That would be awful, REALLY embarrasing. I'd need to right? Does anyone on this site practice a martial art?
Hmm, thats really your call. I have been into skating (like on ramps) for years and I actually found that it helped my SI, because of some of the reasons you mentioned above. I was afraid that if I got hurt one day that people would find out... It served as a motivation for me to ease off on it.
Do you want to take karate over other things? It doesnt have to be a contact sport. If you really want to take it then youll need to be prepared for those things happening. I use to be in karate but that was years before I started to SI. I didnt stick with it that long but at my karate school we didnt fight each other really, it was more techniques and training then fighting. Maybe first find out exactly what is involved in the class. Sorry I wasnt of much help, its your call.
I did Taekwondo while i was still Cutting. It deffinatly helped with my depression. I never really had an issue of cuts opening, but mine weren't in an area that moves a lot so I am not sure. I think as long are you are careful it's ok Like sometimes you may need to bandage them even after they've scabbed over just incase it does open up. But i think it's a great idea!!!
Just wanted to clarify my reply. I never had an issue with cuts opening up, it was just a fear that it would. I'm not sure if a blow to it would open it up or not. I'd go with what was said above^. Give it a shot, see how it goes.
hey i do tkd and still cut. it really helps when your depressed and stuff when you just want to hit summit like pads, when you first start you wont get hit or anything and you slowly build up to it. and your wearing pads so you hardly ever really get hurt. and you get shown blocks that i use to stop it hitting places.it also depends which type of tkd what omne you thinking of joining if you no?

I am currently:
hey i do kickboxing which is a form of taekwondo and at ours we do a lot of padwork which can hurt when people are kicking the pads against your thighs
also we wear wraps around our hands and wrists so be careful there too because the sweat and rubbing really irritates cuts
i agree with what others have said, when i feel really low its a great release of anger hitting a pad and also because martial arts are quite cardiovascular they release endorphins which generally make you happier
this is the first reply ive written in support of anyone and i went kickboxing earlier so that says it all really doesnt it? :)
hope it helps

...You can find out first-hand what it's like to be me
^ When I did tae kwon do, I did a lot of sparring, but maybe that was just my school.
So other people have told you a lot of good stuff already I think, but I just wanted to say that martial arts in my experience are a very good outlet for releasing stress, anger, etc. I definitely think you should give it a try! It will probably make you feel better, and maybe your cutting will even decrease on its own, you never know. Just my two cents. Good luck!

Hey there, I think other people have given you some good advice, I do ninjutsu (also know as budo tai jutsu) and it definitely helps when i'm feeling down. It's very contact-y though, and like smileemptysoul said, I was mostly worried about them seeing rather than it hurting, but that's because of the places I SI really.
