what do people think

what do people think of the idea that psychs think of a diagnosis based on oe feature of illness and then look for evidence to confirm this diagnosis? my therapist said something thats been playing on my mind to this effect

I am currently:

i think some psychs do this. I would definitely say that some of my psychs have done this, then everything is viewed through the lens of this diagnosis they have in mind to make it fit.

When something very different could be going on

and it takes someone with a whole new perspective to see things differently, or look at the whole picture rather than the part that they want to look at and acknowledge.

Having said that, not all docs are like that, and i think it's probably just a human error.

You think someone is mad at you, so you look for signs that they are mad with you to build evidence, when really, they could just be having a **** time and be grumpy with everyone. But you don't see that because you're looking for signs that they're mad at you in particular. xx

Yeah I absolutely agree that this happens, unfortunately.

I think it definitely can and does happen. But not every psychiatrist will do this at all.

Would it help to talk more about the situation? What is it that your therapist said - perhaps you could talk it through with them? It depends on the situation what would be appropriate, but you could consider asking for a second opinion.

"I know you're sad, so I won't tell you to have a good day. Instead, I advise you to simply have a day.
Stay alive, feed yourself well, wear comfortable clothes, and don't give up on yourself just yet.
It'll get better. Until then, have a day."

I agree that not every psych will do it just Im yet to meet one that doesnt go bpd within 5 seconds of meeting me. I remember one situation where Id harmed badly and the psyche was going to admit me and then called htt and basically said oh right im not admitting her then.

Situation wise she accused me of looking for every excuse for a certain situation, then I said she was doing that with me having bpd. This is right after she said that I definitely do not fit every or even many diagnostic criteria but 'if you look at the self harm your bpd'. I dont even meet threshold (just under but still Im under) but shes adamant that I have bpd because of the self harm and the way I react to criticism.

Its a problem because I believe the label has the cmht not taking me seriously. Or seeing actual suicidal type behaviours as para-suicidal. So far the main problems for me have only been half worked on because they dont fit the dbt model. I feel not listened to. I ask for help and basically get petted on the head a lot of the time by some of my profesionals.

This has happened to me. I was 'diagnosed' with bpd when I was 18, mainly due to my psych knowing I self harmed. Even when I would explain something else is going on, I was told this is what I had and it went on all of my papers. Cue two years of me having cycling moods where I'd get a lot done and would not stop talking, then landed myself in such a depression that I wouldn't leave my bed. I was hospitalized and I made sure I was in a hospital that my psych was not a part of so she couldn't be able to interfere (I am in the US and I don't know if you are, so I am not sure if it works this way any where else). After a week of testing and talk therapy, I was told I meet the criteria for bipolar ll disorder and major depression disorder. The psych at the hospital was angry that I fell under the bpd profile for so long which left me without proper treatment for two years.

Are you able to change doctors, especially for a second opinion? This is a hard situation to be in, and I am sorry you're going through it.

I was told that I had EUPD (BPD) when I was 18, by an infamously irresponsible psychiatrist, purely based on my meltdowns. My meltdowns are due to autism. It said on my notes that I have autism, diagnosed when I was 16. He actually had the nerve to delete that off my diagnosis list, which is stupid because I was confirmed autistic by an experienced educational psychologist and you can't be "cured" of autism. When I complained about that psychiatrist (not only for that but he actually made me relapse with psychosis, among other things) I was switched to the consultant, who put my autism diangosis back on my records, and took EUPD off and replaced it with the psychosis diagnosis I got at 14. The consulstant said there's no way I have EUPD and that it is ridiculous that that psychiatrist had even thought of it, let alone put it on my notes. And that autism is autism for life, you can't just delete it, especially when my autism is not mild.

PM me if you want a PDF copy of the ICD-10 or the Mental Health Act 1983/2007. I ALSO HAVE THE DSM-V BOOK and am a pharmacology student.

I have a visual impairment / neurological problems so I need people to type in clear text and no funny fonts. Also excuse any typos, my vision blocks things out.
I have autism and have problems communicating, PMs included.
Just becasue I type well doesn't mean I speak well. I am only part time verbal.
