Wound Care Question - when do you need stitches?

idk. i cut kinda bad (not really too bad) today and i was wondering if i would need stitches.... it's not really wide, but it is like really deep, and i don't want to like get it infected or anything. but i also don't want anyone finding out about it, and i'm under 18, so i can't just to to the e.r. have them treat me and leave, they would totally call my parents and then i would end up in the hospital and that's just not something i need right now. i don't think it's so bad that i need stitches, but idk. i just want to make sure...

If that's a quarter of an inch or more, that should be stitched.

Be sure to keep that clean and covered, sweetie.

Want to talk about what triggered you?

Well, if it's less than 24 hours since you cut, you could try some steri strips on it. If it hasn't stopped bleeding or doesn't when you put the strips on it, then yeah, you might need stitches. Otherwise, just keep it clean and dry; try some alcohol wipes or something like TCP. And yeah, if you want to talk, you can PM me

Do not use steri strips after 24hours, there is too much risk ofg etting infection in the wound.
Even if you are under 16, providing you are sensible and not suicidal, medical treatment can be given without informing your parents. Jut make sure you are mature about it.
The wound in the meantime will need to be kept clean by dressing it in a sterile non stick dressing and anti bacterial cream. Use a bandage to hold it in place.

Generally, if a wound does not stop bleeding after 10mins of presur on it, the wound gapes or the edges dont meet, then the wound should be looked at incase it needs stitching.

Take care

Kim

well. i think it's stopped bleeding today. i'm not really sure if it didn't stop bleeding after ten minutes. i put a piece of gauze on it, but it was like two layers and then i folded those two layers in half to make four, so it was really thick, and then i put some bandage tape over it, and when i pulled that off like an hour or so later, the gauze was completely full of blood and it started bleeding again. i haven't checked it yet today, but i do know it hasn't bled through the bandaging i put on it last night.

um.. yeah, i've never actually heard of steri strips, well i've heard of them, but i have no idea what the heck they are. ... but hopefully gauze and bandaging will be okay... i hope. ...

i really hope it'll be okay, but i'm definately keeping it covered for now.

thanks for the advice. :)
um.. yeah. idk. there's just been a lot of stuff happening lately and i kind of just went over the edge and cut myself.

The reson it bleds when you take the gauze off will be because they have stuck to the wound. To overcome this you should use a non stick dressing. Or asa veryy very last resort put some vaseline on the gauze before you put it on the wound. This should stop it sticking and make it easier to remove.
