Is anyone else an inpatient in a specialist unit

I was just wondering if anyone else is an inpatient in a specialist unit. How are you finding it? How long have you been there? Are you doing any particular therapy?

I've been in this hospital for 18 months and I've found DBT helpful.

What kind of specialist unit? For EDs or bpd, ect?

The unit i go to is for people between 18-30 with schizophrenia. Been there many times, often up to a year at a time. I didnt get offered any therapy except music therapy. And then there was staff to talk to at all times.

However the unit is now closed during weekends and over the summer to save money. The patients are sent to other units as well as the staff. Its disgraceful but how it is in psychiatry here these days.

I fear if i ever need to go back in i wont until being forced, as it would upset me to be put in other units during the weekend with new patients and staff as well as seeing the absolutely horrible doctor in charge there. What helps for me is stability and safety and i wont get it in that unit anymore.

Anyway, rant over.

Hope you feel better soon

i was in a general psych ward for 4 months and then got moved to a specialist EDU for around 20 months, i found it okay, there were always staff to talk to and we got to go out places like the duck pond and when i got better physically we went to alton towers and chester zoo.

I've been to a specialist ED unit before. We did CBT threapy every week day and did some other therapies like art group and creative writing. I found it really helpful and have now pretty much recovered from my ed.

My best friend went to the cassels ( a specialist PD unit) and she said the set up was the same except they used psychotherapy rather than CBT.

Hi, I have had two admissions at huntercombe roehampton. It's a very small unit. And generally quiet. One thing I would say is that there are a couple of LONG stay patients and others are there briefly waiting for a bed back in their locality. Staff are amazing, spend time with you, take you out etc. food is great too. Staff are not afraid of IM'ing you!
It can be hard to get nhs to pay for beds there though, I have tried to get a longer placement there but declined. If you want to know more about it message me!
To my knowledge there are no nhs specialist units bar the cassel.
Private units I have heard of are from three main providers: priory, huntercombe and cygnet. The retreat in york is another but treats co morbid eds

Thank you for the replies.

I've done 18 months at The Priory doing DBT. If I'm right I think Cygnet is pretty similar to The Priory in terms of the therapy it offers.

I haven't heard much about Huntercombe, is it a locked ward or a secure unit? What therapy does it offer?

I had an assessment for The Cassel but I got put on a section so I couldn't go there.

I've heard of The Retreat in York but it sounded quite strict and intense.

I have been to The Dene which was a low secure unit, I was there for a year but wasn't offered any therapy.

Hi Carla 1983,

I was just wondering which unit you were in? (If your happy saying) I have just completed an MBTi group but they don't think I'm suitable for the full programme as an op. So looking into cassel. The other hospitals I have heard of/been to have been dbt based. And they don't think I'm suitable for dbt!
Thanks Nayy
