Have you changed your passwords?

Because apparently the whole internet is now unsafe and you need to change your password for pretty much everything.

I'm only just getting around to it myself. Because no one would bther stealing my identity since I have nothing worth taking. I couldn't get a credit card, let alone the person taking my identity.

on a side note, if you want to see how safe your password is, just try it one this website:
howsecureismypassword.net

apparently the one I'm using now will take six years to break. Although it would take A Million Years just by adding 123 on the end.

That said, I probably shouldn't be using the same password for everything :S

"It would take a desktop PC about

to crack your password"

32 character password
mixture of numbers, letters and symbols
at random places in the password

If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do, what I'm about to do today?

I'm fine! Totally fine. I don't know why it's coming out all loud and squeaky, 'cause really, I'm fine!

Who else is fine?!?!?

Apparently one of my passwords would take 5 quintillion years to crack but all mine are different.

One of mine would take 2 trillion years and the other would take a thousand years.

Mine would be hard to guess anyway because I just randomly pick a password based on what I am thinking about at that point in time and I add numbers no one would bother to think of. Basically whatever I am thinking just randomly gets put together and that's what my password ends up being. I only remember it because it ends up being completely bizarre.

I can pretend that lives last longer than moments. Gods come, and gods go. Mortals flicker and flash and fade. Worlds don't last; and stars and galaxies are transient, fleeting things that twinkle like fireflies and vanish into cold and dust. But I can pretend...”

Lol this whole trillion years thing isn't quite True. It is a very narrow assumption. The Internet hasn't ever been safe, I'm sure there are guys and gals that Crack emails and Facebook accounts whilst half asleep. I'm not saying that having a strong alphanumeric password isn't a good idea though.

EDIT: Just as a rule of thumb, I wouldn't suggest typing your password into a random site to see how safe it is. It seems a little sketchy to me.

Very true and yeah I don't think that things is really accurate (it's more for shiots and giggles than anything) and if someone is an extremely good hacker they would have no trouble figuring our passwords out. I change mine every year or so but that's only because I am a fickle person and usually make a new email every year. Plus sadly most of the time I do end up forgetting my passwords after a certain length of time (my memory is sadly pretty horrid). I honestly have nothing worth hacking into though, as clever and witty as I may seem at times I am rather boring.

Yes I agree with you. I have a lot of different passwords and change them often. Sometimes I have to write them down because I hate forgetting them. I don't really think the majority of people need to worry about people hacking their accounts. It happens, but it's fairly rare.

True unless your like most of my friends and let all their other friends know their passwords which I find idiotic. I never tell anyone my passwords so I can't fathom why others do. I used to write my passwords down to remember them and than I would lose what I wrote it down on or I lose my phone after putting it on my notes and sometimes accidentally end up deleting it off my comp (I have issues lol).

Yeah I don't ever tell anyone my password unless it's imperative. I write some of my passwords down and put them in a little wallet that stays in it's place so I don't lose them. I find that just the action of writing them down helps me to remember them, oddly enough.

I literately never lose my wallet, so why did I not think of putting it there earlier? See I am beginning to think my brain cells are starting to die from all the times I have accidentally hit my head on the wall or when I trip and smack my head on the floor. (Clumsiness is not cute or enduring it is a serious problem that has to do with the fact that I have no sense of balance, I should really get that checked out in the near future.)

Changing a couple of passwords a day, don't forget if the site isn't updated you're changing it for then you'll just have to do it again. Many are emailing you saying we weren't affected or come change your password we're safe now, or there's a bunch of lists on line somewhere, the one show mentioned having one on their site today.
Do you have any idea how much hassle it is to change a google password to a 24 - 32 character random string for 2 accounts on 4 devices?

just tested a password like some of mine on that site 18 tredecillion years, I'm sure they're just making up words for the length of time, I like how its sponsored by a password manager and recommends you use one :)

As I understand it, "cracking" your password isn't needed. Your password would be stolen from the servers you might do business with. The exploit allows hackers to siphon data from server memory. RYL has your username and password stored. The exploit allows people to steal it. There is no need to guess a million times. The exploit doesn't mean hackers can get specifically what they want. Its more like fishing. They "drop a line" into memory and see what they pull out. In that sense its a roll of the dice. Changing passwords on important accounts is probably prudent. Experts said to wait a week or so until exploits are "fixed"

My work password (changed monthly) would take 15 minutes to break. It's an internal password though, not connected to the internet at all. In saying that, at one point I set my work password to abcd1234 because I was getting annoyed by the strict password rules they enforce. I also know most of my colleagues passwords, they used to type it in where your user id was supposed to go so it didn't get hidden!

I have around 6/7 passwords and variations on these passwords that I use so I think I'm ok though a few perhaps could do with updating to something safer.

A good technique my bro told me for passwords is to take the first letter of every word in a lyric from one of your favourite songs.
i.e. baa baa black sheep have you any wool
becomes bbbshyaw
and you can add in the odd number or capital but gives you a string of letters that is easier to remember for you than a random one but not that easy to guess. And makes it easier to have multiple passwords for different important sites so if your forum account gets hacked you dont lose money cos the have your paypal password.

p.s. baa baa black sheep is not my favourite song but it was easiest example i could think of!

QUACK!
