Psychiatric wards

Some people are said to be a risk to others in psychiatric wards but this is actually highly provoked by the prison like environment and the staffs behaviour towards the patient. If you are going to be dragged out your house and imprisoned - you are going to fight, it doesn't mean you're mentally ill it's completely normal human instinct. If you try and escape.. you're called mentally ill, no, you're imprisoned and trying to get out. So many people are called violent when they're probably perfectly normal is this worrying?

I don't know, people aren't usually admitted in the first place if there is nothing wrong.

Staff do understand that it's unsettling, many times have I been incredibly frustrated when a new patient has arrived on the ward and keeps kicking off, but the staff always tell me that of course they are going to be upset because it is unsettling, so they do understand.

I've only been called violent when I have actually attacked/gone to attack someone, not just because I've been upset or kicking off.

And I suppose someone who was 'normal' (for lack of a better word) would have enough insight to know that kicking off on a psych ward would reinforce the staff's beliefs that they were unwell and know that it is much more likely that they would be listened to if they were calm and put their points across calmly.

I'm fine! Totally fine. I don't know why it's coming out all loud and squeaky, 'cause really, I'm fine!

Who else is fine?!?!?

I think it's true that sometimes people might become more aggressive because getting sectioned in that way is terrifying thing to go through. I've also heard from good sources about staff in the psychiatric system being brutal. (I'm talking about a minority of them, not generally.) I know what you mean about the instinct to struggle if someone grabs you and drags you along - it's pretty normal.

But I think if people get hospitalised they're usually very ill, and it's done for a good reason - i.e protecting them/other people. In this area anyway it's actually really hard to get hospitalised because they closed down wards.

I agree with what's been said- in order to be sectioned or admitted to a psych ward then there is good reason, they cannot admit healthy people to psych wards only people with serious mental illness that means there is a risk of suicide/serious self harm or hurting others.

But I do agree in that some psychiatric wards are not nice environments and can make patients feel very agitated. I think it's 'normal' to want to go home, but I think if a patient is excessively violent then that is a symptom of mental illness. Most patients I was with in psych hospital never became violent or aggressive, it seemed that the very ill patients were the most violent and could not moderate their behaviour.

Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…
