weird bruising situation..

A couple of months ago (August, I think), I was on a camping trip and fell into a fire pit that hadn't been used. It had a metal grill on top of it, and I fell right into it in the middle of the night. I scraped my lower leg, but the biggest injury was on top of my thigh, on the side. It was a huge black and blue bruise, which was also very swollen. It was extremely painful and took weeks to go away.

The bruising finally went away after awhile, but left somewhat of an "indent" in my leg, for lack of a better word. It looked still swollen in the area, but not hugely noticeable...it was just like a bump. It didn't really hurt though and since the bruising had taken SO long to go away, I figured the indent would go away the longer I left it alone.

Fast forward to now, and for the most part, the indent is gone. BUT, now the area is starting to feel kind of painful again- especially if pressure is put on it. There is still a slight bump to my leg, but not nearly as bad as it was. It just seems random to me that it would start hurting again out of nowhere.

My question is: should I be concerned enough to see a doctor over this? Or is this normal after falling and having such extreme bruising?

I would say you definitely need to see a dr. That sounds really serious.

You may have fractured the bone. I was told once that in particularly cold periods, fractures can begin to hurt again (I don't know how true this is)

I think you need to see a Dr and get the leg x-rayed. There could be all sorts of complications if it was a fracture that did not heal properly

Thanks for the replies.

I have to make a doctors appointment next week to get a TB test done, so I'll ask about it while I'm there!

This isn't a fracture.
The probability is that when you injured yourself a haematoma formed under the skin or within the muscle. This is like a huge bruise or collection of blood in the tissues. Large ones can take weeks/months to be reabsorbed by the body and can leave some scar tissue within the muscle/tissues where it was. I think it is this scar tissue which is hurting you now as scars can sometimes do!

Still, if you are seeing a doctor in the near future it should not take them too long to take a look and give an opinion.

You can't say that this is not a fracture. Many people, myself included, have broken several bones and been none the wiser until being X-rayed some time after for a different reason. Although your explanation is a likely option, you don't know the person, the exact details of the injury and so on, so it would be foolish to rule out anything.
