I know what it's like to want to die. How it hurts to smile. How you try to fit in but you can't. How you hurt yourself on the outside to try to kill the thing on the inside. I tried groups, didn't work out just made my depression a lot worse.
I suppose now there are soooo many new bands and singers around (thank you, autotune) that you really have to stand out to stay popular. Or risk becoming a one album wonder and then forgotten about.
And if that means acting like a total dick, so be it.
I don't know her personally, so hard to judge if she's a 'real' freak of nature or not.

I don't really get the whole thing of people putting Miley down over it. She's probably told to do all these things and since everyone is talking about her weeks later id say her PR group are doing a bloody good job.
I think there's far too much 'slut-shaming' going on. I agree that done of her actions recently have been undertaken in potentially inappropriate situations (like during times that are pre-watershed/whatever where children might be watching) but she is far from first and by no means last to do so. You see very similar things in music videos. Someone recently (it might have been Justin Timberlake?) that released a video with a lot of provocativity, but it was deemed 'art' by most, but Miley has been deemed a slut. Bit of a double standard.
She's 20 years old now - we have page 3 models in the UK who have their first photoshops done on their 18th birthday - and I think people need to remember that. It must be really difficult to grow up in limelight like that, and be forced to keep such a sickly sweet and clean image, I think it's almost a natural reaction to shout a big '**** you' to the world when you get to an age you can do that.
I don't actually like Miley Cyrus that much, I wouldn't call myself a fan by any stretch of the imagination, I just don't think she deserves quite as much crap as she's getting right now.

I almost feels like people can't view her in a sexual way, like they do other pop singers, because she was very much in the public eye before the age of consent.
Almost like you very much dislike hearing of your younger female family members behaving sexually when they're older, because you knew them when they were small, but don't really have a problem hearing of other people talking about sex/making references to sex, that you didn't know as children/younger people.
I have to say I am somewhat torn. Comments like "it's just pop culture" sadden me - because they are true, and I kind of wish that the world was just a little bit less sexual. It's just everywhere, in the media, posters, music, everywhere.
But then that sounds somewhat hypocritical because I am a sexually active human being. However I think I am a little sensitive to it maybe because I work in healthcare and I see the results of young girls getting pregnant or repeatedly getting STIs etc? I'm not sure.
I really do feel that children are growing up younger and younger though. There seems to be no childhood these days, kids go from babies to teenagers, start dressing, swearing etc like the adults that they think they are, but are not - and that's when problems can occur. These children get into situations that they don't yet fully understand.
I think it just makes me sad.
However, I agree that Miley on her own is not to blame, she's not the first or the only one, and yes she must have a PR team on board. I think I just wish that role models like she is - for you can't deny that she is - could just tone it down a little.

As far as "kids could be watching"... I kind of feel if you let your kids watch the VMAs, you should know what you're getting into. It's been the point to cause the biggest controversy you can on there since it premiered with Madonna's like a virgin performance. I honestly don't get why any parent would be surprised that it could be inappropriate. It's in no way new and that's not Miley Cyrus's responsibility. Her job is to make money, and making an outrageous performance does that. Honestly I think it's getting a bit old to see how controversial you can be. It's why I dislike pop culture; it's about shock rather than art. But I find it a stretch to say she's influencing young teens like it's her responsibility. She's not their parents; if they can't figure out what's age appropriate that's really not her problem. In her career doing that performance or not can mean millions, and I think it's kind of absurd to expect her to hurt her career over hypothetical kid viewers in a place known for its inappropriate and provocative performance when parents could just say, no you're too young to watch that. People need to exercise some judgment and stop relying on pop culture to make decisions for them. It's really not like she did this at the Super Bowl or anything. The VMAs are known for this.

The publicity worked; I haven't seen the video, but I've seen it referenced on chat shows, and when I heard the radio playing Miley Cyrus my ears pricked up and I listened. So no matter what, it's been pretty effective.

Personally I think everyone is overreacting. It was tacky, trashy "entertainment", which is exactly what you'd expect from the VMAs. It just came from an unexpected person, so now everyone is taking it too seriously.
