I've heard that they've deactivated phone lines so no more bombs can be detonated by using mobile phone signals. Google is currently running a person finder so people can search for loved ones and you can make sure friends and relatives are okay. http://www.google.org/personfinder/2...on-explosions/

Sh*t. I'm going to America in early May and probably won't be using my American passport.
THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS.

Sucks for people in Boston. It's one of my favourite cities. My thoughts are with those that have lost loved ones.

God I hate people. My personal and completely uninformed guess is that it's domestic, but I could be totally wrong. The scale just seems like it. I do endurance events and know people in Boston, so this is more scary than usual. Saddest thing is that the race was doing a memorial type thing for the newtown victims' families.

And I worry our response as a country will be on how to up security at races rather than to ask the really hard questions of why our country has become so violent. It just seems there's always another random shooting and now this. It really feels mass violence from within America (which this may or may not be) has gotten worse since 9/11, and we need to consider why and figure out what we can do to change our culture. It just makes me sad people resort to violence instead of working out differences, getting themselves help, etc.

Its not only one of my fav cities but I like that area of the city (called Back Bay). Boston is a big uni town this time of year with a reported 250k students. The population of the city (and it feels like a big town) is only around 625k. There is a park near the bomb site called Boston Commons and I like it more than Central Park in NYC

Wow, I didn't know that the population was that small (relatively). I've only been once so I can't remember exactly where we went but we did a tour of the city and went to the holocaust memorial. The memorial for the Irish Potatoe famine is quite cool as well!

Texas explosion was a little over an hour away from where I live. I've passed through there lots of times. Very sad to hear about it this morning. Hoping the casualties are lower than news sites are reporting :/ It's been a tough week.

I really wouldn't be shocked if it was an accident. It only exploded after a fire had broken out, which could be caused by any number of negligent actions by employees. Thats why so many emergency personnel died. With all the chemicals there, a fire that wasn't controlled quickly enough resulting in an explosion just doesn't seem far fetched to me. It's bad timing, but I don't see why it's suspicious unless they find otherwise.

I've been watching TV all night. Huge shootout/manhunt in Boston. MIT cop dead (MIT = Massachusetts Institute of Technology). Two suspects identified as Mike Mulugeta and Sunil Tripathi. Tripathi was a Brown University student missing the past month. He is on the run and Mulugeta is now dead.

The guardian has different names for the suspects and states they are two Russian brothers, which is interesting.

Yes now the reports are the guys are brothers from Chechnya (Muslim)

"Law enforcement officials identified the suspect still on the loose as Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, 19, of Cambridge, Mass. His brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, was identified as the man killed during an encounter with police after an armed carjacking of a Mercedes SUV in Cambridge. Tsarnaev was believed to be in his mid-20s.

The brothers’ alleged motive in Monday’s bombings remains unclear, but they appear to be originally from the southern Russian republic of Chechnya, and two law enforcement officials said there is a “Chechen connection” to the bombings. Chechnya has been racked by years of war between local separatists and Russian forces and extensive organized crime since the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991.

The Chechen conflict dates to the early 1990s. In the summer of 1999, fighters in the predominantly Muslim republic rose up in an attempt to throw off Russian domination. Vladimir Putin, then the Russian prime minister, responded quickly, firmly and brutally to put down the rebellion.
Later that summer, there were several explosions across Russia and Putin blamed Chechens. Putin sent the army back by force, which resulted in Western criticism of Russian tactics and human rights violations."

That's their job. I'd be very concerned if they did otherwise, as of right now this kid is still a suspect in an ongoing investigation.
