does morality come from religion or does religion spring from morality?

I don't think that religion brings morality at all. In fact, a lot of religious people I know have fewer morals than myself and I consider myself to be an atheist.

Religion, throughout the ages, has prided itself on being "moral" but yet has went around discriminating against different groups. They make discriminatory and ignorant remark after remark about women, the LGBT community, minorities, hell, even other religious groups. Religious people like to think that they're moral. But being religious does not equate to being a moral person, just like being an atheist does not equate to being a horrible person.

Actually did a class on Ethics a couple of weeks ago. My friend thought that morality comes from religion until the lecturer pointed out that we hold ethics higher than religion - like people criticise religion for being unethical in some cases, therefore we hold ethics above religion.

Also many people aren't religious but still have strong morals. Then you have religious people who don't seem to have any morals at all.

Why are you looking at it on an individual level? What about common societal morals? Where do they have their basis? The Ten Commandments? Who knows.

Look at anything in religion and you'll see morality is weighed according to whose side you're on. Believe in the right God and genocide, murder, rape, etc it's all np.

Religion comes from the fear of impermanence; death. Morality comes from the desire to treat others as one desires to be treated.
