Anyone who uploads on Youtube willing to help me out? I'm confused!
Today, I uploaded three videos of my guy's band from a show they played last week. Youtube sent me an email that said that my videos actually belong to EMI Music Publishing. I don't understand how this could be, seeing as I taped them, live, with my own camera, and they're a random unsigned Seattle band.
The only reason I could see there being some confusion is because the band is called "Candlemassacre" and plays covers of an obscure, Swedish 80's doom metal band called Candlemass.
The videos are still online, but Youtube says EMI can post ads on them and advertise on my page anytime they want.
I feel like this is kind of ridiculous. So I went to the "dispute ownership" page, and it basically told me that if I submit a claim and there's ANY TINY LITTLE CHANCE that I'm wrong, then Youtube will "Take Action" against me and my account.
However, I really f*cking hate that some big label can come mess with my videos. Especially since there are thousands of videos on Youtube that are actual, direct rip-offs of popular bands.
You...could dispute if if you want, but EMI Publishing does indeed own the lyrics to a portion (presumably, the portion that you uploaded) of Candlemass' music. So...yea. Regardless of who performs it, they still own the rights to it.
Now, that doesn't mean that EMI will actually do anything about the infringement, so if you want it up badly enough, you could probably just ignore the warning. Worst case scenario, I imagine, would be that Youtube deletes your account. *shrug*
Lame. I suppose I could delete them and re-upload them on Facebook or Vimeo. It just sucks because uploading them takes literally hours on my computer.
And honestly, I don't really care if they want to "claim ownership" or whatever, but having to sit through their stupid ads just to watch a blurry, shaky, unprofessional video of a cover band is, y'know, really annoying.

It sucks but they probably won't put a video ad on there, just a link to itunes for anyone who wants to buy the song or possibly a small ad at the bottom. I have a clip of Fringe on my youtube account, which I uploaded because I couldn't find it on there and thought it was so hilarious I had to share it with my friends. Not long after I got a notification that the company that owns Fringe (forget who now) had claimed copyright, but like you as long as I acknowledged their ownership they didn't mind me having it up as it was only a clip. A year and a half later there's no adverts or anything, so I'd say just accept it.
Also, all this copyright talk reminds me of this song- enjoy!
