As long as the 'usuals' on a thread can sense the thread going a bit skew-wiff and steer it back, life is good :)
by spamming about spam and not doing uni work usually!

In terms of the BPD thread, I recently frequented it when I was informed by a MH professional that I may well have it, I did kinda go straight in and ask for some support and haven't really been back in since, mainly because I have been very woeful recently and feel it's not fair to throw myself at a bunch of people who hardly know me for support with said woes. I do intend to saunter back into the thread to give support when I am more stable though.

My problem with it, and I can only speak for myself here, is that suicide is a huge thing. After reading the last few pages of the thread in question (including the posts bashing this thread), it does seem to be trivialising the issues. It's almost putting feeling suicidal on the same level as feeling happy or okay. Like when people ask how you are "yeah, I'm feeling pretty suicidal/good/okay/ill/down today". It is not on the same level as the others, or at least it shouldn't be. And I think doing so is incredibly dangerous.

I can't say for sure, but I would think that an individual thread would be more likely to get at least some response quicker than a post in one thread, which is surely what people want/need if they are feeling suicidal?

Edit: Just read your reply to Charlie. My personal opinion is that if you are feeling actively suicidal on a daily basis then you need to go see a professional, and fast. Posting on RYL probably isn't going to be enough for you, if your feelings are that intense. (Note that I am referring to the general you, not you personally.)

You're welcome to disagree with me Roli, but advertising this thread telling everyone to go look at "People talking about shite they dont understand" isn't especially cool.
I'm not prepared to engage in discussion about this if things are going to take a personal tone.

Especially as several people who have expressed opinions in here have been suicidal at one point or another, so actually they do understand it....

The supportive replies on the 'If you are feeling suicidal, post here' have sometimes been what I've needed to pull me back from the brink. Perhaps that particular thread may be due a slight name change, but other than that I see no problem :) As you were, RYLers :P
Hmmmm I enjoy typos and this is a classic! Mod Disorder....do you think if I started this thread it would be deleted? (JOKES)

What she said ^

I have never posted in 'feeling suicidal' thread but due to excessive LFV stalking I have noticed that often it seems to be generic responses whereas I feel a separate thread would receive more supportive and useful responses. But hey, just my opinion.

I think the issue with that thread is there is a difference between feeling suicidal and wanting to die. It's a small difference, but it's important.

I like to differentiate between active and passive suicidal thoughts. Acive - I have a plan and method and I am in danger of carrying it out. Passive - I would quite like to die/not wake up but I am not activly doing anyhting to bring about my death any time soon.

I think it's okay to talk about having chronic feelings of passive suicidal ideation - because some of us here may have these types of thought often. But I can honestly say I do not believe anyone who claims to be actively suicidal for long periods of time. You would either succeed or be hospitalized.

Maybe that's blunt.

I fail to see how anyone has been bashing this thread. Suicide is a very serious thing and i take it very seriously.

She meant that this thread, that you are currently reading has been 'bashed' in the 'if you are feeling suicidal post here' thread as apparently most people who are posting here have no idea what it is like to feel suicidal.. at least that is what one poster has said in that thread.

The point is, that this thread isn't specifically having a go at that specific thread, it is just that several people are questioning if threads such as that are detrimental to the purpose of the site. And tbh, I can kinda see both sides of the arguement, but am leaning towards the it may not be wise for it to exist as it can easily turn into tip sharing.

i really dont think the issue is the content of said thread, more the title of it.. but i didnt make this thread to talk about specific threads, more to talk about threads that separate illnesses in general.

I personally find specific support threads daunting because I don't post often but read a lot, the idea of posting in a thread that has lots of pages is very scary because there is sense of community that has already been established within it and feels uncomfortable to make a post. Regardless of how accomodating people are there is always the risk that you post a reply just as soon as a well known poster does and slowly and surely the replies filter through to the person that everyone knows and has history with....

I think that that basis of RYL is a support forum, and I don't deny that is has gotten a lot bigger since ruin - I wonder sometimes about how only communicating with people who share your diagnosis is somewhat hindering your ability to heal/ recovery. An example of such is if you are only speaking with others who are feeling suicidal yes they might support you through the moment, but what about the posts that you could have received if you posted on a main forum board from individual who perhaps have been there themselves but are not at the moment and have a different prespective to offer? I say this as a general example - but I think it can be applied to all specific threads is there a subtle acceptance of some of the maladaptive symptomatology that again is a hinderance?

Hey guys,

I just wanted to apologise for my behaviour last night. As everyone here I am dealing with some things and you really did catch me on a bad day, however, this is no excuse for my actions.
I hope you can accept my apologies.

Regards, Roli

p.s Doctor Colbertface- also just to clarify- 'as apparently most people who are posting here have no idea what it is like to feel suicidal.. at least that is what one poster has said in that thread.'.. I didn't mean it like that, I meant that people havent used the thread and spent time in there (for whatever reason, which is fine as its not everyones cup of tea), not that people haven't been suicidal. I'm sorry if it has come across wrongly. x

O, I need this

Yes there is going to be that level on EVERY thread, not just the specific ones. But from the threads i have used and poped in on I have had questions/support given, and from the bpd thread we do welcome people and try to help the newer posters as much as the older ones. I think until you start to post and find out for yourself its easy to assume you will be completely ignored.

But from my experience most have been friendly to join or to ask even if i dont use them all the time.

No worries Roli :)
And I did suspect that you meant not knowing the thread as opposed to not knowing what feeling suicidal felt like.

I hadn't actually been in that thread for a while, and what I saw of it last night did change my perceptions of it and whilst I'm still not personally comfortable with it, I can see that when used correctly, it can be a comforting and supportive environment, and you are right, posting means they're not on a bridge somewhere, which is always good.

*Just wanted to leave my opinion here*

I can see how specific illness support threads can be helpful to those with that illness, because they can relate to each other and find advice more easily, and help people here feel like they 'belong'. But it can sort of divide up members a bit and make those without feel sort of lonely and maybe like it's harder for them to get help. When I first came here, I remember getting the notion that "this disorder has it's own thread so therefore must be worse than the rest" I was younger then, please excuse the immaturity of that.)

I guess it's helpful for those WITH the disorder, but for those whose illnesses don't have seperate threads it can leave them feeling a little bit alone, like an outcast I guess. I don't think this counts for the university student thread, for example though, because that's a general thing not limited to certain illness.

Despite this, I guess it's still helpful to those who use it, so I don't think they should be stopped / taken down.

I quite like the idea of a complex person thread. I have to feel pretty bad to even consider starting a thread just for me, because that just feels like overreacting, but i have no diagnosis or anything ( which doesnt help me take myself seriously) atually i sometimes think about making a 'everything is fine but i still feel rubbish' thread. Butbit doesnt really matter because i can still get the support i want anyway ne way or another
