We got a new Tesco Metro up the road from us. Cool, I thought, amazing.
I went in there today to get a few bits and bobs, and also some cash back. Mainly for the cash back.
And guess what?
They don't do cash back.
Like, why?
Was I SO miffed! I had to go round to the CoOp to get some more bits and bobs just so I could get some cash. [I have an aversion to cashpoint machines in London].
I don't know if other Tesco Metros are the same, but I just thought I'd give a heads up. And vent my spleen!
I've managed to get cashback from Tesco before, just not from the garage. Something to do with them not having that much cash in there to be able to give cashback. But when I went to the actual Tescos they gave cashback :)
Maybe it's cos it's just a small one
The Tesco Extra in Wembley does. I don't remember if the Metro in Bethnal Green did, as that's years ago since I lived there. But it's plain annoying! He couldn't explain why when I asked, but then I was blatantly too peeved to listen!
It's because they aren't allowed to keep a vast amount of cash in the till and have to do regular cash drops into the safe on account of the small stores being pretty soft targets for being turned over. The staff would know this but a lot of places with the same policy also have another of non-disclosure to the public.
I'm not, by any means, saying "don't hate Tesco" - there are plenty of reasons to but this probably isn't one.
Personally, I despise the evil empire and everything for which it stands

Our Tesco Metro doesnt give cashback either - which is really annoying when the cashpoint directly outside isnt working. Its a very bizarre practice. Like one of the posters above, I've often had to walk down to our local co-op too to get any cashback. Maybe its just a London thing cos I've never had the same problems when I've been in Leeds!
Or maybe he doesn't want to stand next to the door getting rained on and/or freezing his balls off? It's annoying if it's not a company-wide policy, but it's not the end of the world. Either keep enough money on you for your daily purchases or use your debit card.
My little brother got accused of shoplifting in a Tesco Express in London once. He was about 10 or 11 at the time and had wondered off a little bit from us to look around.
Security guard saw him put his phone back into his pocket and accused him of stealing and made him empty his pockets.
A security guard at the local Tesco here was sent flying unceremoniously to the floor after a false accusation.
A friend of mine picked up a large plasma tv with his shopping, went through the till (20 feet from the guard) and was stopped on the way out with the guard demanding "Show me your receipt!".
My friend's response was "Piss off - you've just WATCHED me pay for it!"
He then grabbed my friend from behind as he walked off. Probably not the smartest thing he'd done for a while.... lol

That doesn't help if you really need cash and are relying on cashback due to a lack of cash machines, though. A lot of the shops near us are local and won't take debit card under £10 spend. And if you haven't got cash on you, its a half-hour walk to the nearest non-chargeable cashpoint.
Oh and its actually colder by the fridge than by the door usually, so I'll go with the hidden Tesco gold supplies theory myself!
I had to have cash to pay someone. Our cleaner. Unfortunately as I work at the weekends I hadn't sorted it then. I hadn't been well either, or I'm normally more organised.
