As a random anecdote, one of the things I love about this site is that when people are mean to other people, even if it's not quite worthy of being reported, or there's no mods online to do anything about it, there's often other members that come in to stand up for the victim. Not in a confrontational way, but just doing their bit to keep the peace and opposing bullying.
Not really sure where this post is going... I'm not explaining this anecdote very well...

I have stated before I only know two other persons in my entire country who selfharms- and I have never discussed the issue with them face to face or told them about this site. Neither of my health professionals can deal with my issues- I just tell them if I have "coped" well or not.

Training- peer counselling is more effective than people realise- and I guess it is just whether there is a longterm vision for the site. I do agree that it is tiring to be a cheerleader or referee. But saying the mods can do better is not a criticism. Improvement is good for everyone.

"Having their own issues" isn't always going to fly as an excuse, because the whole purpose of the site- not being alone- then is proved false. Seems that they are very alone.

Yeah it takes effort to have mod meetings, but you keep trying.............or nothing changes.............

I think the Mod's do an excellent job as it is.

I was under the impression this site was about helping yourself and learning to do things for yourself eventually, such as getting professional help. Shouldn't that be the same when it comes down to mod's? Instead of relying on them shouldn't members sometimes sort out a situation themselves?

I also thought the mod's job was to moderate things, not control them completely - this is only a website, only so much can be done over the internet.

To be honest I don't think mods should have set times that they have to come because, as others have said, they have their own lives, they aren't robots. I don't come on here all the time, because I don't have time as I have other things to do, like the mods do.

I'm not sure about actual training as such. I assume that you go through some kind of training to be a mod (as in, being shown the ropes, reading guideline threads etc etc)... However, there are Supporters on RYL and, although Live Help hasn't been online as much recently (for similar reasons as why mods aren't online 24/7), you've got to be careful not to merge too many positions as otherwise people are going to become confused as to what their role actually is.

As others have said, I would be happy to be a mod in the future. I understand there is a lot of pressure and it is time consuming therefore I am aware I am not ready to become a mod right now due to still needing a fairly high level of support but it does seem that people are willing to become mods and are active with post reports around the forums. That's all we can do right now. Hopefully this thread has shown that the mods are trying their hardest and people are dealing with the situation right now as they best can.

Accurate.

I think you mods do a far better job than a lot of people on this site give you credit for *tips hat to ye all*
It's not fair that you get all this sh*t from members who don't stop to think about your circumstances or the fact that a hell of a lot of the things that are complained about are beyond your control.
That's all.

Now I'll play your ghost as my ace, whenever I'm led astray.
But I am actually good, can't help it if we're tilted.
I'm in my right place, don't be a downer.

The picture made me lol!

And I completley agree, I know I was one of the ones who complained initally but once several people had pointed out the issues I realised I was in the wrong and took back what I said.

It's effective, yes. But is that what the mods are supposed to do?

As others have said probably more eloquently, there are the Supporters, there is Live Help, there are the support boards. Support on RYL comes from the members, for other members. This is a community where we're all, more or less, in the same boat, so anything else wouldn't make much sense to me.

The mods, now, as I understand should enforce the rules. They're not counsellors or therapists, or may not even be particular suited to give support... why change that? If mods should be trained supporters, then we'd need a hell of a lot more people for the job considering how many members there are. But I do think that some resentment towards them stems from this misunderstanding. (Correct me if I'm wrong, etc pp.)

As has been said before, but I will say it again for emphasis:

1. This site is NOT a replacement for professional help. It is intended for use alongside professional help so that members can gain a bit of support from other people undergoing similar issues.

2. Moderators are NOT SUPPORTERS. The site has a group of dedicated supporters who's role is (as the name suggests) to support. The moderators are here to moderate - stop people from breaking the rules, punish with infractions those who repeatedly break the rules, ensure that the website is a safe environment for all the members.

While the mods are sometimes able to offer support and advice this should not be expected of them, because as I have already said in this thread we are all people with real life commitments who are also struggling with our own mental health issues. It is unrealistic on a site like this to expect anyone to be available 24/7 for support and advice, so while we all do our best we cannot give 100% all the time.

For anyone who sees this site as a replacement for professional help then I feel very sorry for them, because no one here has the expertise or training to be such a replacement. And at the end of the day, even if we were trained professionals, NOTHING can replace face-to-face contact with a trained professional who can administer appropriate therapies.

More than a little fruity...

I still have it somewhere. It works still, but I changed cell phone companies so I got a new one that isn't red.

I personally cannot see RYL as a substitute for professional help- because as everyone has pointed out- there are no professionals here.

However, when it comes to a taboo subject like SH/SI, it has gotten me through crushing judgement by family, friends and MH professionals. But most importantly myself.

Like I said- I as a forum user come across this thread and get worried. For obviously my own reasons, it feels like the mods hate me and their job and I can expect to continue to get bullied at my own risk.

But one thing is clearer- it is a self regulated site. The members have to police their own behaviour for the most part, and that does mimick the goal of recovery for SH. Drug dependency has its 12 steps. I suppose SH has to evolve and develop its own recovery pattern.

I suppose as a therapist and researcher myself, it is hard to just see a table as a table- and not a potential footstool or want to research where the wood comes from.

But are you sure you couldn't at least slip a note under Harley's door..........?

You'd need a phone with endless numbers to include all the issues over which someone might wish to contact a mod. That list sounds like it sums it up nicely though!

*wipes tears from eyes*

bitomato, I don't hate modding and I don't hate any of the members. Okay, the mods are getting a bit disillusioned with things right now, but we're sorting it out. If I hated it, I wouldn't be doing it.
