Frederick Tranter baccy shop is at 37 High Street. I got the Gold Label amd Cotswold which were both nice. When I had about quarter of a tin of the Gold Label left I was giving it a bit of a shake to level the baccy out and accidentally let go of the tin; the contents ended up all over the floor and I was like 'Nooooooooooo' lol

I don't smoke very much, so I smoke branded cigarettes (opposed to rollies etc)

I haven't smoked for almost three weeks now. Feels really good, except for the occasional cravings.
I never liked premade cigarettes, so I rolled my own. The taste and the buzz just feels more intense and it's much cheaper. American Spirit, Pepe and Djarum are my favourites.

I'm going to be a boring old codger again. The only thing that's really hot about smoking is your corpse when it goes into the oven at the crematorium.

Smoking is a killer. Thirteen times more smokers get lung cancer than do non-smokers and, having seen it, lung cancer is a horrible and painful way to die. Smokers breath is horrible, their clothes stink - as do the clothes of those obliged to be in contact with them for any length of time. Walking down any High Street the contrast between the fresh air and the fumes of the pathetic individuals standing in the doorways having a drag is particularly horrible.

You may think you're immortal but, take it from me, you ain't! And stopping isn't seriously difficult if you're really determined ... I know, i've been there.

Tony.

Never surrender.

Yeah but... you gotta die of something. Someone told me that death is very traumatic for the vast majority of people, whatever the cause or age. /Happiness.

^^Have you ever seen anyone die of lung cancer?
Or suffering for years and years with bronchitus/emphysema and needing oxygen daily - unable to walk across a room?

Smoking Kills. You all know that. You only have to look at the data from when cigarettes first came into fashion.

Co-incidence? I think not.

All smokers should visit a lung cancer ward.

I've seen it. And its not nice.
Yes everyone has to die of something,
Yes you may get a different cancer or something almost as traumatic.
But believe me the coughs of those lung cancer patients still haunt me today. Its the saddest thing I ever heard.
And even sadder because they brought it upon themselves, and they know it.

Im not getting into a smoking debate, but i think most of us are aware of the risks, we dont need to visit a cancer ward.

If thats the case then everyone who drinks should go see alcoholics, everyone who eats any sort of fast food should go see super obese people, everyone who gets old should go see a nursing home.

If you smoke but arent aware of the risk then you should read the back of your cig packet, they have some lovely pics on them these days.

What i really never understand is why people get so up in arms about it....and Im not talking about hating smoking or being pissed off when people smoke near you, because really thats fair enough. But when non smokers start harping on about the risks I dont get it....its not up to you(universally) to preach the health implications of smoking and then they get all frustrated when you light up again O.o

I agree too, were all going to die one day, so I'll continue smoking and if it kills me, fair enough. Its going to happen whether I smoke or not.

There are times to stay put, and what you want will come to you.
But there are times to go out into the world and find such a thing for yourself.
I aint no abacus but you can count on me.

Smoking kills?

Edit: Excuse my sarcasm. I'm just upset because I know the risks of cancer, and not being able to breathe is one of my biggest fears. As an educated woman I know that it would be awful to die from lung cancer but don't feel I need to visit a lung cancer ward to cement this understanding, in the same way as, in my personal opinion, children don't need to visit Auschwitz (etc.) to really feel and be affected by what happened during the Holocaust. (Just to confirm, I am not comparing smoking, which is a choice, to the Holocaust).

I choose to smoke, and at this time, it would not be helpful for me to give up. However, that does not mean I will never give up.

I'm not trying to preach.
I'm vegatarian and don't believe everyone should give up meat.
But smoking even in moderation is far more dangerous than fast food and alcohol (in moderation).

I would also warn people of the dangers of alcohol, and the dangers of obesity if that was discussed, but funnily enough no-one has posted a thread about how amazingly cool it is to be an alcoholic.

Anyway. You've all made clear that you know the risks, so thats fine. Perhaps bear in mind that 11 and 12 year olds may well see this and get the impression that smoking is cool though, something to think about.

You definitely have a point - just don't expect many people to care/find it important. Sad but true. A lot of people just don't give a damn.

It was all meant light hearted!

Anyway, as we are on this debate, how many things give you cancer? Pretty much everything so should we stop eating, breathing, walking, drinking anything and the rest just so we don't get cancer? I know all the risks as I'm sure anyone who has done science in school does and yeah.
My mum has never smoked, never drank alot, had a pretty healthy lifestyle and still got a cancerous tumour. She's had it removed now so she's fine but still, she still got cancer.
People still get cancer out of the blue because all cancer is is a mutation of cells which can happen TO ANYONE completely randomly!

This subject has recurred so often during my time on RYL that I doubt that much more can be got out of it. However, let's be clear:

1. Smoking really does kill - not everyone, but a hugely greater proportion of those who do

smoke. Of course non-smokers may get cancer of the breast, bowels or wherever, but that's not a reason to eliminate one definitely proven cause of cancer.

2. Everyone has a choice as to how they live their lives and what damage their lifestyle may cause them. But they should understand the risks that smoking involves - it wasn't previously fully understood and during WW2 servicemen were actually given rations of fags (I wonder how many lives that subsequently cost?). But the risks are understood now and I'm horrified at the proportion of young people who smoke despite today's knowledge of the dangers involved. Their choice, or perhaps they think that they're specially selected for immunity ...

3. Giving up is not nearly as difficult as most smokers imagine. Everything depends upon working up an absolute determination to stop. Once that's done the first day or three may be hard (a packet of Polos or some other substitute can greatly help) but each day becomes less hard. And determination is everything. I finally gave up once and for all many years ago and I wouldn't now smoke a single cigarette for £1000 - just in case the addiction should begin again.

4. Finally, if you do stop, the sense of physical well-being after a few weeks makes it all worthwhile. You can breathe and smell again, and taste again, and just feel so much hugely better all round. And less broke!

Tony.

Never surrender.

I don't feel immune to cancer. Though there is evidence that if you stop smoking young, the risks of cancer reduce by a lot. People often smoke because they enjoy it and it relaxes them (even though more evidence says that physiologically it doesn't reduce stress). It, for me, is also a way of getting a 'break' away from social situations. I also have never found it easy to give up. I can get past the first few days quite easily, but usually restart after 3-6 weeks, often when there's been a stressful event in my life. Of course, I'm not disputing that not smoking is healthier than smoking!

We're on a self harm site. If 11 and 12 year olds are on here, I'd suspect they have bigger problems than possibly thinking smoking is cool...

Uh... I agree with what you're saying in principle, but this is a site that normalises self-harm, suicide and eating disorders. Yes, smoking is bad, and yes, people who make it seem cool aren't cool - but I really don't think that's the most damaging impression that people will get from this site.
