Archeologists uncover first known 'gay' caveman

Scientists say that they have uncovered the first known gay caveman 5000 years after his death.

Archeologists have uncovered the grave of a man they believed to have died between 2900 and 2500 B.C. and was seemingly buried in a way that suggests he was homosexual.

The skeleton of the man, found during an excavation in the Czech Republic, was found on his left side with his head facing west, buried with household jugs and no weapons.

An oval-shaped jug was also found near the feet of the skeleton.
During that period, men were traditionally buried with weapons, hammers and flint knives, and their bodies were placed on their right side with the head facing east.

Women were interred with their bodies on the left, head facing west, and buried with necklaces made from teeth, pets, and copper earrings, as well as domestic jugs and an egg-shaped pot placed near the feet.

Scientists are certain that the body placement was not a mistake, as customs were very strict on burial and funerals at the time.

"From history and ethnology, we know that people from this period took funeral rites very seriously so it is highly unlikely that this positioning was a mistake," said lead researcher Kamila Remisova Vesinova.

"Far more likely is that he was a man with a different sexual orientation, homosexual or transvestite. What we see here does not add up to traditional Corded Ware cultural norms."

There had been previous skeletons discovered where a female warrior had been buried like a man, and Siberian shamans, or witch doctors, had been buried in a similar way to the "gay" caveman, another member of the archaeological team, Katerina Semradova, said.

"This later discovery was neither of those. We believe this is one of the earliest cases of what could be described as a transvestite or third-gender grave in the Czech Republic."

i think thats pretty cool i may sound like an idiot i know nothing of that period in history i admit it. Isnt it interesting that the earliest people in history probably accepted this man in their society? but he might not have been as we dont know the cause of death but he got a proper burial.

I dont want any backlash i admit my lack of intelligence of this era in history or the science of gender identification i dont know the accuracy of the article i just think its pretty cool :p

It really seems more accurate to say this person was gender-varient, however, both conclusions are within the lenses of our own culture.

I also think it sound more like it was a transgender person rather than a gay person, but whatever s/he was, I think it's pretty cool that it was accepted and recognised in the community.

Cool!
Mind you we don't *really* know whether the person was gay/bi/trans/genderqueer or what, because we don't know their society...but it certainly sounds interesting!

Exactly we don't know if they were gay/bi/tv/mfi/whatever. Could just be they were buried as a woman as punishment for being a bad hunter or something.

How do we know that he wasn't buried like this as some kind of punishment and how do we know for certain that this is indeed a male isn't it possible a gender mistake was made

I just can't accept their conclusion of the man being gay, based on his burial positioning.Okay, as the article said; there were strict burial instructions etc
But yeah, positioning isn't enough to sell it to me.

Agree with the idea it could be punishment. Thats quite an interesting theory.

One of the news articles states that they have found a women buried as a man before (was she a lesbian or just a tomboy? gasp!). Taking on roles of another gender isn't unheard of.

This man (assuming he is a man) could have simply not been much of a hunter. Perhaps his wife died and he took over care of the children, perhaps he was a man who had a shamen type status, or even had some kind of disability or learning impairment that meant he couldn't leave the community to hunt as the other men did.

Gay is a term that was probably meaningless then.
