i have been sectioned 6 times since, am currently on section 3 for a year and am appealing.
i hate being sectioned, this time around when i was sectioned, i agreed to go to hospital, but they said, nope, we'll section you anyway. im not sure why, can anyone help me with this?
I don't know your circumstances but they didn't let me go voluntarily either because if your informal you can leave whenever you want but a section can keep you there also if it's anything to do with meds they can force it on a section.
I was in a similar situation as you scarletts web.
I was told I needed to go to a specialist DBT locked ward, I agreed and yet was still sectioned. I think they knew (from past behaviour) that I would discharge myself otherwise.
Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes but when you look back, everything is different…

I've never been formally sectioned under the Mental Health Act, but I have been taken in by the police (136) and was subsequently asked to spend a few days in a locked psychiatric ward voluntarily as IP. But that was because I had the choice between that and being sectioned because I initially said that I didn't need any help and was in the sort of "yeah whatever idc" mood. I would've probably been very resistant if they decided to section me straight away.
I've been sectioned on section 2 three times, section 5(2) once and a section 136 twice. I've been on a secure unit 4 times and a regular psych ward 10 times. In the last 6 years
I think Christmas and New Year are hard for many people......I asked a nurse on the secure unit if there were any times when section 136s are at their peak and she said either when it's very hot (peak of summer) or very cold (peak of winter)
PM me if you want a PDF copy of the ICD-10or the Mental Health Act 1983/2007. I ALSO HAVE THE DSM-V BOOK and am a pharmacology student.
I have a visual impairment / neurological problems so I need people to type in clear text and no funny fonts. Also excuse any typos, my vision blocks things out.
I have autism and have problems communicating, PMs included.
Just becasue I type well doesn't mean I speak well. I am only part time verbal.
I was first sectioned last march under section 2, then re-graded to informal. Few months later they put me back on a section 2, and when that expired i was put on a section 3 which i'm still on currently.

I don't know for sure but when I was doing my psych rotation we had a situation with a patient who came in voluntarily but then was reluctant to stay and was pretty much told "if you discharge yourself we'll section you" and that isn't good. Sectioning should either happen or not but shouldn't be used as a threat to keep someone in informally. Also, as said below, a section 3 gives the medical team more legal rights than having an informal patient e.g. restrictions on leave, enforcement of treatment and possibly later instatement of a CTO.
I've not been sectioned but saw lots of sectioned patients on my rotation. I think that most of the time it is going to seem unfair to the patient because sectioning is often used when the person has poor insight into their illness or is unwilling to have treament which will keep them or others safe. The difficulty is that actually that's when it's most important. I'm sure that there are times when it is done badly but I never saw the decision to section someone being taken lightly and remember that getting something like a section 2 or 3 involves multiple people and has to be well justified by the person requesting it so is quite a well considered decision.
Always seem to get things just that little bit wrong.
