A Saturday Night Story - a brilliant riposte

A brilliant and very highly intelligent lawyer named F E Smith (a contemporary of Winston Churchill) was appearing in court and had just concluded his case on behalf of the Defendant.

The judge said "Mr Smith, having listened to that I don't think I'm any the wiser."

To which Smith responded "True, my Lord, but at least you'll now be better informed"!

To me, the audacity and brilliance of that impertinence is unequalled. God, how I wish I'd been capable of something like that in my time in Whitehall ...

Tony.

Ouch! I often wish I was brave enough to say things like that...

Thanks, effervescence, I'm glad at least somebody appreciated it (nearly 30 views and only 1 response - ouch again!)

Wow I would never be brave enough to say that

I don't get it, didn't last night and still don't. Thought I'd be able to figure it out and well I can't.

Please be nice nice now and explain, I know its probably glaringly obvious, but I can be a tad dim every now and then.

Tony.

That reminded me of Churchill when he said

Bessie Braddock: “Sir, you are drunk.”
Churchill: “Madam, you are ugly. In the morning, I shall be sober.”

Nancy Astor: “Sir, if you were my husband, I would give you poison.”
Churchill: “If I were your husband I would take it.”

Well, chinahorse, what Smith was saying to the Judge (and they were formidable figures in those days) was that following his (Smith's) address to the court " of course, you are just as thick as you were before, but now, at least, you've had some of the facts explained to you!" What brilliant insolence - and it just may be that the Judge was too thick to understand that insolence; we'll never know ...

Smith later became a formidable political figure and a close ally of Churchill, but he died relatively young and never reached the highest ranks of politics.

Hope that helps ...

Tony.
