i dont think thats quite what she meant. and its not really the message that the one who was saying either.

Agh no, it would get too religious [Ganesha, for example.. ] I just didn't want to sound too intellectual, which some people find boring or whatever. I was just making jest about the intentional typo/pun. I had no intention of posting a thread on elephants! It would be like the lecture we had at uni on the different interpretations of Winnie the Pooh from all schools of literature interpretation!!! Shame I threw out all my uni work.
Anyway, back to topic!

This probably isn't the book you meant, but made me think of this::

Ah, you see, as a small sized person, the Te of Piglet is my cup of tea! [beats a post modernist semi structuralist or whatever interpretation of Winnie The Pooh!]

I just wanted to saaaaaaaaaay, that when I'm struggling I listen to very sad music and it does make me more sad.... However, I'm unlikely to listen to happy music when I'm feeling sad.... Erm, also, there are some sad songs that can be quite uplifting and allow me to 'feel' without bringing me down? They may sound sad to others, but actual words within the song are uplifting - does that make sense? However, I don't think wallowing in despair and making yourself feel worse is very beneficial! x

does it make you sad enough to cry? cuz like i said earlier, theres chemicals in tears that cause depression so crying rids you of some of those.

Some songs allow me to cry, yes; and sometimes I will put a song on that allows me to cry and just sit and type and type until everything is 'out', and that can be beneficial. Keeping everything locked in, is as unhelpful as feeling sad all of the time.

What I mean is, that some people will surround them with songs on SH and suicide, videos, films, books and their life is then 'just' that and it can keep you on that low level....? x

The implication seems to be that most of the people who respond to these "negative" threads must be doing just that and I think that's an unfair assumption.

I don't honestly see that much of it in R&R. I only usually look at the book threads but I had a quick look and there's maybe four self-harm / suicide / whatever threads on the first page. I am guessing that most people who respond do not spend their time wallowing in this stuff. But I think it's natural to have some level of interest in the subject. Whatever kind of issue people have, I think they're typically interested in hearing about other people - real or otherwise - who've been through similar. Please please don't tell me there's a difference between this and "wallowing". I know. What I'm saying is I don't see how you can say any of these people are doing that, and therefore it comes across as pretty patronising to go on about how you just don't understand why people would do that.

I think it's totally acceptable to use RYL as an outlet for that kind of thing. It isn't exactly the kind of thing most people will want to talk to their friends about, whereas they will probably discuss other films and music.
I wasn't going to bother replying to this thread again, since I believe I've said all that I can on it. However, I'm going to respond if I'm basically told I'm being patronising and judgemental.

From my experience of these (maybe they've changed now, I haven't read them in a while) it is the same people who respond. Yet they don't respond to the more general or positive posts, which is where I get my assumption that most of their interests revolve around these topics. Why not join in discussions about other things? It seems to me (and I'm sure I'm not the only one) that there are a lot of people on this site who do only stay in the self-harm forum or the more support-orientated ones, and use this site only to talk about self-harm. There seems to be an assumption that because we all self-harm, we all seem to have an interest in music/books/films that contain that. This is/was a community, and I don't think one can exist built purely through a linking thread of self-harm. There needs to be more to it than that. Maybe that's where RYL is failing, that there are now too few members interested in maintaining a more general and community atmosphere here, rather than being just a support site?

I don't really want anything done with these threads. If people want to discuss it, they can. This thread came up because of confusion to do with the rules. They say that you cannot link to or promote self-harm, yet a lot of these songs are obviously glamourising and/or graphic and/or 'triggering'. And there was also a few people here who wanted to understand why these threads keep popping up, and what people gain from them.

No one is wanting to erase the darker aspects of humanity. In fact, a lot of those questioning these threads are those wanting a more open/less bubble-wrapped RYL! The questions come from when someone seems to be surrounding their entire lives with this, through interests, friends, clothes, etc.

I, personally, think that support can work so much better when you know more about a person than just their emotional background and whether they have any professional support in their lives. And a way to do that is to use the site in a more general sense.

I do reply to support threads, as do many others. It's a case of a lot of us being frustrated with RYL the way it is right now and that is impacting on the way quite a few of us would like to support. I don't think RYL is doing alright, at all. There are a lot of issues that have been on-going for a long time (since before I joined even), which is creating more and more frustration and disillusionment here.

Also, at no point did I say we should force anyone to reply to 'happy threads', in the same way you cannot force someone to support anyone else.

A) If you're frustrated at RYL, leave it. Simple as.

B) If you don't like support threads, don't go in them. Simple as.

C) About the songs and music and happy feelings and things. I'm a musician. I play the flute. When I play a piece of music, I can play it in a style that reflects my mood, no matter what the music. Having played, having streamed my thoughts through the music, I feel better. When people play sad music/suicide/SI music, they can stream their own thoughts, feelings and moods through the piece of music. It's similar to what I do. What's wrong with that?

D) I agree with the CC board. I posted a thread, nothing to do with SI at all. They were a series of poems with hidden messages, such as "nature" or "A spider" or "Holidays" and "family". The most triggering thing in them was probably the fact that I mentioned a bedroom wall in one of them. I got no replies, except for when I updated my thread with another poem. Also, in R&R, a remember a Monty Python thread. I love Monty Python. I use it to laugh away my bad feelings. It fell to about the millionth page within a week because it wasn't sad. See my point?

This place amazes me. I don't post any more. I'm only here for the CT and because of my journal. I see no point in posting for support. If I get a reply, it'll be within about a week or two. Granted, some people are helpful. A week or two after the incident which I needed support with.

tu as tant de choses à dire,
mais le tout reste enfermer.
et quand tu ne sais plus quoi dire,
tu te mets à pleurer.
Mais ça ton publique le voit pas,
tu l'incites à rêver, pendant que toi tu le regarde...

yes but it just seems like some of your points seem to contradict the others. is it your view that things should change or stay the same in r&r? you seem to say that people should be aloud to post whatever they want i r&r, but then in point d you go on to say talk about the monty python thread being ignored.

Sure, people should post what they want. But I think they need to realise that life isn't all doom and gloom. The only things in life aren't bad. So when something happy appears, it's arsewanked off to the millionth page because it's about funny stuff.

ok. well i disagree, i think most people know that life isnt all doom and gloom. i fail to see how you can say that about r&r to be honest. some of the most popular are threads about self harm related topics, but right now the topics with the highest post count are 'what book are you reading or just read?' 'gigs / concerts' and 'twilight saga series'. so um i dont get it. im not saying it couldnt be used for wallowing in self harm related topics, just that i dont think people do.
