Yeah but the book is fantasy. Can you not put the same logic to a heck of a lot of stories.
For example, lets stick with the whole the fantasy theme and go for the most well known fantasy, lord of the rings.
All these people fighting over a piece of gold, using the magic to do bad. People are killed and wars are raged. Hardly seems right to me. Why would these elves get invovled with such a mamoth task for little reward.

Or how about the 'best' vampire book, Interview with the vampire. What they do to the poor little girl they turn, seems wrong. Killing humans to satisfy their own needs? Putting on a show, that people think is fake, but really killing more humans for entertainment. Why does anyone stay around them?

See, fantasy boks are just that, fantasy. They are not true to life. You ask why bella would stay with edward when he puts her in such danger. Well humans can be blinded by love. When you love someone it can be hard to see their faults. Take for example, people in abusive relationships, who chose to stay there as they love their partner. Humans are unpredictable and dont always make the best choices.

Yes there are bits in the book that would be creepy if it were real, but its fantasy, and vampires are not real. I dont think everything has to be nice in the fantasy genre. Other genre perhaps, like love or crime etc.

But even then, look again at other stories, romance ones perhaps. take cinderella. She suddenly wants to meet a guy she danced with for one dance and he has to find her after one dance and does it based on looks and a glass slipper. I am sure there are better things to base a realtionship on.

Yes, of course you can. I'm not picking on Twilight, it's just that this happens to be a thread about that book, so it would be rather OT to talk about other ones. Of course there is a disparity between fantasy and real life. But good characters have motives for what they do. I can't comment on Interview with a Vampire because I've not read it, but the Elves in LOTR get involved (albeit reluctantly) because their entire world is being threatened by a totalitarian leader with world domination plans. They're not squabbling over a piece of gold, the stakes are extremely high.

All I'm trying to do is ask what it is that motivates Bella. What motivates her is love and lust, and she is entirely blinded by them, which is understandable. I'm just going to quote myself here because I can't think of another way to put it.

Like I said, I get the appeal, and that, because it's fantasy, you can ignore the weird, controlling bits. I also get that Edward represents the 'the heart wants what it wants' argument, in other words, Jacob is the logical choice in every conceiveable way, but Bella just doesn't love him in the same way that she loves Edward. Fantasising about somebody who loves you so fiercely that they would die for you is nothing new. I know from third-person persepctive that can turn into very scary in real life. I guess that affects the way I read it.

It's a literature student thing. I'm trained to look for the issues underlying any novel, and to me that doesn't ruin it in a lot of cases. A lot of my favourite books are ones I've studied. But I also know that is not how most people read fiction. I like to dig deeper, where most people don't see the point.

We'll just have to agree to disagree.

If I dug deeper into all the fantasy and sci-fi books I read... I would never read anything. Books should be read for fun... why ruin it for yourself or others by analysing it... But that's just my opinion :)

I read for fun too. I don't analyse everything I read. But even when I do it doesn't ruin a book for me. I'm able to do both. I've just read a lot of criticism about the Twilight books so I've become interested in that. But yeah, it's an individual thing. Everyone's different.

And I stand by the above quote.
Really, imagine life without love? Love is the ultimate thing, the one thing I dont think you can live with out. The thing that has the ability to change everything. You say that to give her life up for love was silly, but was it really? Does not everyone do this in real life? Couples get to gether and buy houses, because they love each other and want to spend that time together. They give up on dreams of studying or traveling for the other person. Is this wrong? no. It just means that the love they experience is more powerful and more important to them than the dreams.

But love is much more than passion. What about her love for her family and friends? She's prepared to give that up. And their love for one another seems rather shallow at times. I never really got a picture of what it is about Bella that Edward loves, apart from being passionately attracted to her scent. And Bella just talks about how physically beautiful Edward is. Why does she think he's so amazing? And vice versa? That's what I can't relate to. It seems more like lust than love.

When I read Interview with the Vampire (repeatedly), it seemed that it was acknowledging that those things were wrong. Reflecting on them. The killing humans thing, in traditional vampire stuff, they can't even survive on animal blood. If you read the book, Louis tried to do so, and it didn't really work. In the other books, many of the vampires acknowledge Armand's brutality. The theatre is burned in the end. So no, no one did stay around them. They died.

Anyways, that is off topic, I know, but I felt that it was important to clear up.

I do like Twilight on the surface level, I think it's a decent story, but I do agree that there are undercurrents. While the people on this thread may be able to discern the difference between fantasy stories and how you should really live your life, I'm not sure a 10 - 12 year old can, and they could take how Twilight is written to be the epitome of a perfect relationship.

The same could be said about any fantasy type thing though. That's where it becomes a parents responsibility to explain to children that it's fiction. It's like... Home and Away. It's a terrible example of life. But lots of kids think it's real. It's their parents responsibility to explain to them it's fake. I think when people start putting real values on a fictional stories they legitimise the people who think it's real. It is okay to have an opinion on something. But when you try and force an opinion down someones throat or make them feel bad for their own opinion? That's when it's not okay.

Also, there are a few different vampire series where the vampires survive on animal blood.

NINE-YEAR-OLD actress Mackenzie Foy has reportedly been chosen to play human/vampire Renesmee Cullen in the final installment of the Twilight saga, Breaking Dawn.

Entertainment Weekly reports the young actress is close to signing on for the role of Edward and Bella's vampire/human child, although Summit Entertainment has yet to confirm the casting.

The hugely popular Twilight films made global stars of Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart who play star-crossed lovers Edward Cullen and Bella Swan.

If chosen, Foy will play a key role in the film, portraying a character that ages 17 years in just seven.

Sources say director Bill Condon will employ similar digital effects to those used by David Fincher in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, where Foy’s face would be digitally transferred onto the face of a younger child.

Filming of the two-part final is due to start in November, with the first film scheduled to hit theatres at the end of 2011.
