Medication Question - antidepressents - possbile side effects

Recently i've been having a lot of problems with memory loss, insomnia, nightmares, headaches and dizzy spells. My boyfriend thinks they are side effects of my antidepressents.
But i've been taking them for 18 months and had no problems. Is it possible to start experiencing side effects after this long? I would think that if you're going to experience side effects it'll be when you start taking them.

Thanks, it was probably a pointless question anyway.

I've got an appointment to see a doctor in a few weeks. I've just moved house so had to change doctor as well as i'm outside the catchment area for my old surgery. I'm not looking forward to meeting the new doctor.

I'd definately mention it to your doctor. Mental Health problems in themselves can lead to memory problems, as can ADs. As well as that, if your ADs make you drowsy that decreases the ability of your memory to work well.

Saying that though, if you've now been on the ADs for 18months and not seen a drastic problem until around now then it is unlikely to be related.

One thing I would say however is that often memory problems come on quite slowly so it may be due to the ADs or something else and it's slowly worsened over time. By their very nature it is hard for people to realise they have a problem with their memory and often those around are the first to notice. As well as that they can start off v v v mild and gradually build up so it may be you've been having problems for some time but now they've only just become more noticeable because it's greater than what most people would forget and people have noticed you're getting worse. I'd definately talk to your boyfriend or other close friends/ family to see how long they think this has been lasting.

Insomnia and nightmares can often come with anxiety and mental health issues so if your meds aren't working as well as they could do this mayt be the cause or just simply if you have something on your mind right now which ANYONE can have regardless of any MH problems. These in turn will make you very tired throughout the day and when you are tired this often leads to headaches, especially if you're trying to concentrate on something or if you are stressed. As well as that, there are huge links between tiredness/ lack of sleep and memory loss so it may simply be that you've got something on your mind which is causing the insomnia/ nightmares. That's stopping you sleeping and making you tired, giving you the headaches and also worsening your memory. That in turn will make you more stressed and tired and a vicious cycle continues.

Try not to worry about seeing a different doctor. If you registered a while back they may have your notes already from your previous doctors, however sometimes these can take up to 12weeks to move from one surgery to another (which is far from desirable). If you just explain to them all of your problems, write them down if that helps and just pass them the sheet or even have a list of bullet points to just prompt you to say/ ask things. As well as that, if you don't get on with that doctor, it's not the end of the world. Most surgeries have several doctors working there so you could always see a different one there. If you're starting to get really worried about your problems then feel free to book an earlier appointment. It isn't something that is classed as an emergency/ urgent though so it depends on your new doctors booking policy (which can be different for people who are seeing a doctor there for the first time) as some have long waiting times apart from urgent appointments. Some you book that morning apart from early morning appointments. Some it's a combination of the 2 where you can book in advance to see a particular doctor or you can ring near to the time or in the morning and they will hav new appointments open (though some of these appointments may be shorter; I know the doctors I go to runs this system and though the appointments are technically shorter and you are booked in on a list to see either one of 2 doctors or the nurse practitioner (who will then send you to see a doctor straight after if they feel it is necessary) and you can't choose which, it's kind of like you get a time and the doctors and if appropriate the nurse looks on the system to see who's appointment time matches up/ who's been waiting the longest after their appt time and sees them first. As well as that, though the appointments at that time, though guaranteed for the same day if you ring up before the slots fill up(however, like I say, this is just something my own doctors runs and others also follow this plan), are only supposedly 5minutes long, if you need more time then that the doctor that you see will take longer as with any appointment.

Also, when booking an appointment at any doctors don't feel the need to say why you're going if they ask (unless it is for an urgent/ emergency appointment where they often need to know to check you actually qualify for one of these) if you don't want to/ feel able to. It can help the doctors if they know what you're going for as they can check if you've been seen for that before, when and what happened but at the same time, if you don't feel comfortable with telling them then the doctors can look back in your records whilst you're there, if needed, it just takes a bit more time.
