help! is something wrong with my cat?

hes just come in from outside, hes scratching himself and licking his coat ferociously. hes panting, his tongue hanging out and breathing really rapidly. he wont sit still and is running about the place.

at first i thought dammit, hes got fleas. and i have ordered a flea treatment with my tesco order which will arrive in the morning. shut the bedroom doors so he cant get near the beds. thinking now i will go out and get a bus, get a flea treatment from the pet shop now as hes going mad.

but its the panting??? its very loud and he looks wide eyed. he came home last night and i thought he had been hit by a car or something, i heard him miaowing at my front door and he very very slowly walked in. but then seemed fine as time wore on.

confused!!!!

My cat pants when he is ridiculously hot and dehydrated. Has he got much water?

My first thought was fleas too, so it's good that you're doing something about that but I'm not a vet, so I wouldn't really know.

It's horrible when pets get like that, hope he's better soon!

Do you think maybe it's something in his coat irritating him? I can't think what would but the panting makes me think it isn't fleas. I know it might be really difficult but maybe try rubbing him down with a damp cloth might help soothe him.
Sorry I don't have a lot of advice, I just hope he's okay soon.

Im not a vet but the panting and the running around sounds a little bit like rabbies.
If he is still acting in that way tomorrow Id sujest taking him to the vet. Just to check it out.
It probally isnt, but rather safe than sorry :)

Some cats get actually be sick because of the fleas if they are that bad.
You need to get some flea treatment on him right now if you think he has got fleas. Mind you, you want to be careful about buying flea treatment from a supermarket as there flea stuff does #### all.

Frontline is one of the best things you can get - but it's a little more money. Or a flea treatment from your vets. Supermarket flea treatment are a waste of money and can end up in your pet being more sick.

You should, especially in the summer, flea him every 1-2 months. You shouldn't wait until he has got fleas to use treatment on him. The treatment is to stop fleas.

If it's not fleas, I would advise you to take him to the vet as soon as possible if he hasn't calmed down within the next 12-24 hours.

Hope he gets better soon.

I would've said fleas aswell.

I was going to suggest what Stegosaurous said - try and rub him down with a cool cloth to try and take some of the irritation away?

In my experience with fleas (I have 2 cats & 2 dogs who have all had fleas in the past year), Frontline is the best you can get to treat them.

Although as people have said, panting isn't normally associated with fleas, so IMO I would hake him to a vet for a check up just to be on the safe side.

I hope he gets better soon!

yes i did go to the vet, i was having problems getting through to them when i posted.

travelled for an hour to get him to vet, then was in for about 40 seconds. she says whatever it was, he was fine now and he probably either got stung or got a really bad fright.

so hes fine.....going to get him treated for fleas tomorrow and a new flea collar. the vet said he doesnt have fleas, but i will treat him anyway as hes an outdoor cat.

I know one time my cat got sprayed in the mouth by a stink bug ways acting like that and drooling all over the place, coulda been that as well. Run a lot of risks with an outdoor cat.

I know you sorted it but for future reference when my cat got stung by a bee he was panting and running around, licking etc, the vet said he had a mild allergic reaction to it but it wasnt a problem unless he was struggling to breath and sluggish

Surely if you thought something was seriously wrong with your cat you'd take it to the vets, and not post it on ryl?
