If you take it to an apple store, it is an apple iPod? then they could at least take a look at it and see if it can be repaired.
you'd be surprised what opening something up and leaving the circuitry to dry out can do.
Many a gadget of mine has ended up dunked in water and 8 times out of 10 just opening it up and drying out the innards restored it to life.

Gabz trust me you totally did the right thing.
I still worked on my knee when it went....&& it didn't fix itself up for like a week, needed mass amounts of support etc.... when really if you just rest it it can fix itself up so much quicker!
Taking a day off was the good and responsible thing to do! Ignore your dad!
