I'm planning on appling to do a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology Course once I've graduated from university, but one of the requirements is to undergo both an enhanced CRB check and an Occupational Health Check.
I was sectioned under section 3 at the age of 16 due to severe depression and self harm issues, and discharged from hospital at 19. I'm now 23 and have had no relapse of any self harm issues or problems with severe depression.
Does anyone know the likelihood of this affecting my chances of getting accepted onto a course? (The course itself involves employment by the NHS).
If you have evidence you have been treated/are being treated for the conditions you mention and a health care professional can verify that you are, and are working for recovery/stability there should be no problem.
Like MeaCulpa said, if you have been treated and had no relapses; then there shouldn't be too much of an issue.
I am a student nurse and had to go through both of these checks; I am in Scotland though, so not sure about your criminal record check (we have disclosure scotland, but I assume it is the same thing...) but it will just check you aren't on any registers or been arrested/cautioned for anything too serious.
As for your interview with Occ Health. Well, I was honest with them in my application about it all. I had to talk a bit about it, and the treatments I recieved. And I was then passed and I am now in practice placements within the NHS.
I think as long as you are honest and open about it, most places are fine. Maybe call the Uni/College about it, I am sure they would be able to give you a bit of guidance about it all.
Hope some of this helped.
Good luck with everything!!
Come in.
Can you hear me?
Am I even talking?
There is so much I want you to know.
I am counting on someday you'll wake up and see me.
im a podiatrist in nhs and had to go through same stuff aswell for uni and work. occy health form will ask you about this and if they are concerned they have an interview with you and as long as you are 2 yrs free they have no problems at all. the uni people will have no idea about ur occy health stuff poss ever so def doesnt affect ur chances that way of you not being picked but occy health would over rule them if need be.
occy health are fully aware of my issues now as i was off work for 3 months a couple of yrs ago and i thought i was going to be sacked but no such problems :)
sorry i got a bit waffly-im tired xx
this pic is so i can always remember jen who was my l'il sock monkey friend who has left ryl and i miss her!!!

I'm about to start my undergraduate degree in September and wondered about this, my teachers couldn't tell me though, but they don't have a doctorate.
Have you got your postgraduate degree and they are asking for this after?
I tried to be perfect but nothing was worth it
I don't believe it makes me real
I was acctually just talking about this in my training yesterday...with a ward deputy manager in a mental health hospital. So I'll tell you what we discussed.
It was bascially about an old pateint who had legally stated she didn't want to be sectioned as it would effect her job, this is how the disscussion started. We then asked, well if you have been sectioned does it affect your job? We were told that there is no reason it should if you are clear. An occupational health form will ask you if you have ever had issues with depression etc, and the best thing to be would be honest and state that you are x amount of years clear. But if you state that you haven't...unless they are extermly concerned....they acctually aren't allowed access to these records.
Your CRB is a criminal record check, on which your section 3 should not appear as it is not a Criminal section a section 3 is medical.
I hope this helps, this is just what we were told in our training && may not be accurate or other people may have other information which is more useful.

Thanks for this. :) What if you still suffer from depression? Would that affect it?

I would say so yeah. I mean I got my job I said no on my occupational health form...I thought I was clear but I'm not and the job is affectting me slightly && I may be leaving...but if ou still suffer and are open about it..this may affect it. I say may because I know there are staff in the hospital on anti depressants and the managers do know this. I think it depends on the severity.

^^ I was this. I started a job at a psychatric hospital working with teenagers as I thought I was okay and then I spiralled, cut and left 2 days after I finished training.

“I told him I was going to betray you, and betray Lyra, and he believed me because I was corrupt and full of wickedness; he looked so deep I felt sure he'd see the truth. But I lied too well. I was lying with every nerve and fiber and everything I'd ever done...I wanted him to find no good in me, and he didn't. There is none.”
