They were all dead & were in some kind of fantasy world that Gene had created. They were all from the future apart from Gene who was from the past. Keats was taking people souls down to Hell whereas Hunt seemed to have the ability to send people souls to Heaven. Nelson (The Black landlord.) on the other hand seemed to be some kind of guide/wise person.
At least that is my understanding of it all. Hope that helps & makes sense.
ETA I was not expecting the ending at all, especially Gene's last line; it had me bouncing in excitment in a complete squeeeee moment
Daer Lord above the American ending of LoM was absolutely dire; I think they took the name Gene Hunt a bit too literally lol
(Slightly off on a tangent I know.) One of these days I'm gonna get the Spanish remake of LoM. hopefully that has a better ending than the American one.

Oh god, it's awful. The characters just aren't the same, and the acting is horrific, it's as if it was some sort of telenovela. They're reshowing it on TVE here at the moment. It's called La chica de ayer, incase you didn't know.
I was really excited, but it was rubbish.
I'm a massive LOM/A2A fan, and I thought the ending was kind of nice, but kinda weird, I dunno.
Anyways, watch la chica de ayer if you want, but don't have high expectations, also, I dunno if you speak Spanish, but I imagine the english subtitiling would be hilarious, especially because the references they make just aren't relevant to our society. God, it's rubbish!

im not too sure about the ending. Plus how come gene hunt was part of her past when she was a little girl? (he found her after her parents died last series) surely with this conclusion it wouldnt be possible????
After all this has passed, i still will remain
After i've cried my last, there'll be beauty from pain
with her parents, she said something like "you're not supposed to be there". She didn't remember him as part of her past, so he probably wasn't.
Like Sam and his dad abandoning him in LoM, I think she had to make peace with her past and what happened with her parents, whatever.
I thought Daniel Mays was really good as Keats, though.
The ending could have been different/better, it left some questions like yours unanswered, but I thought it was okay.

Lets just be thankful it didn't end like the US version of Life on Mars, where they were all astronauts in the year 2035.
.... Yeaahhhh.
Well they had to rush the ending of that show because the series wasn't a big hit and was cancelled. They cobbled together an ending just to answer the questions of what few fans they had.
But as for the Ashes to Ashes ending it's simple:
They're all dead and in limbo. Unable to move on because of all the regrets they have in their lives.
Gene has been there the longest, Chris and Ray somewhere in the same decade.
Shaz had been there since the 90's.
Keats was either the devil or a demon trying to tease them into hell with promises that all their dreams would come true.
But in Life on Mars this same being turned up and tempted Sam with that promise and it worked, briefly, until Sam realised how detached he was from the real world. And the price of accepting that promise was to feel like the real word is a dream; an ironic twist on how that dream world felt so real. and went back.
But in the end Gene helped the lot of them move on, having helped them through their regrets. But he didn't move on himself because he still has his regrets.
I'll wager it makes more sense than the ending of Lost.
