Just watched the first one 'Mental: A History of the Madhouse'
I thought it was interesting, and at least brushed on some othe methods that were used without proper research. And also that they acknowledge mistakes were made in the past and look to a certain extent at the two view points - positive and negative - of the closure of the asylums (though that was quite rushed at the end in my opinion).
Most of that has generally matched with what I was taught at uni about the development of drugs and ECT and labotamy etc. I would have liked them to have explained that ECT is still used nowadays but is much less violent than what we saw in the film....because seeing that could scare someone shitless if they were going to start ECT treatment!
I guess I felt it was a good introduction to previous mental health care...
You made up your mind to torture mine!
If you read a scar like a book, you will relise the story in which you over look
I'm just watching the Sectioned programme on catch-up (a sort of i-player on my tv).
I can't help feeling for these people.
People who are asking how they can view these programmes from abroad.. have you tried using an anonymous proxy site based in the UK to access bbc i-player?
“The good things don’t always soften the bad, but vice-versa, the bad things don’t necessarily spoil the good things and make them unimportant.”
“Nobody important? Blimey, that’s amazing. Do you know, in nine hundred years of time and space I’ve never met anyone who wasn’t important before.”
“If it’s time to go, remember what you’re leaving. Remember the best. My friends have always been the best of me.”
^ It won't work if you are outside the UK. They have also recently changed something resulting in some UK people can't watch it either. I think you need to contact your service provider and get them to fix it.
**% "ability to understand"?
We still have brains!
I think that it was unfortunate wording but probably meant more in terms of the ability to give clinical consent to what could otherwise be a 'violation of privacy'. Since being sectioned can mean that you are being 'forced' into treatment that you would not consent to because you are deemed unable to make the appropriate decision for yourself I should imagine the same is true for being filmed.
Always seem to get things just that little bit wrong.
"don't wish, don't start, wishing only wounds the heart"
I watched Sectioned last night and thought it was really good actually.
Some of the psychaitrists I found quite patronising but the people were portrayed as people and not just their illness ya know? All three guys were likeable and genuine and hopefully showed people that anyone under section is a real person and not just "crazy" or a lunatic.
I was rather cynical and expecting lots of shots of locked doors and shouting and alarms and actually there were none.
I thought it was quite good. Though I found it a bit weird as one of the wards was one I was on and I've talked to some of the staff who were on it. I thought it was sensible and quite sensitive. The only thing I think could have improved it would to have had a woman on!
I finally got around to watching Mental. Even though I already knew all of it I thought it was good. Maybe slightly negative, but that's probably to be expected. It would have been nice to have someone on who liked the asylum, who had something positive to say. It would also have been nice to really emphasise that the doctors of the time were doing what they thought was right. Hindsight is marvelous.
I thought they were both good. Remembering that they were designed to be seen from an 'outsiders' point of veiw. So not really by anyone that knows anything about mental health.
I thought that how they got the guys to say that they understood about the filming and didn't film when they didn't want them too was a step in the right direction. Proving they were people and not just statistics.
The world is just illusion always trying to change me.
You will find wonder wherever you can, and spread joy whenever you are able.
I felt emotions of gentleness and pleasure, that had long appeared dead, divide within me. - Frankenstein.
I guess the reason there were no woman was that none volunteered.
I liked how they had a dr who was highly qualified to show that it can happen to anyone

From what I know Cam that wasn't the case. One of my friends was sectioned on the ward when they were initially looking for volunteers and it specifically said men on the fact sheet. Doubtless they must have had their reasons I guess.
