Triggering (SI) - If you wear long sleeves in the summer, will people think you self injure?

If you wear long sleeves in the summer, will people think you self injure?

When it’s summer (or hot outside), I always wear long sleeve shirts and jeans and running shoes (I sometimes wear a hoodie instead of long sleeve shirts). I currently live in California. I have never been criticized or asked why I wear long sleeves by anyone, really. A few people might have made a slight comment about it, but that’s it.

How do people where you live react to you wearing long sleeves? What do you say about it? Is it usually just a one time thing or do they constantly bring it up? Do you ever get any weird looks? Has it ever caused any problems?

If they don’t think you self injure, what do they think?

Thanks.

to be honest people dont think about long sleeves much here
its arm warmers that generate controversy as to whether you self harm or not
and most people tend not to achknowledge self injury much i mean aklot of the time people are blind to it
unless they really wish to really focus on it and then they will ridecule it

My parents have made comments on it in the past, but I think that's because they have an idea I may do it, but have never really accused me or asked to see, so it's all speculation.

Other than that, only a few people have ever questioned, and it's usually "aren't you hot in that?". On the other hand... anytime I see somebody in long sleeves and it's relatively warm out, it's the first thing that jumps to my mind.

If someone ever says to you "You need to stop thinking so much," call them ignorant in your head and keep thinking deeper. It is this mentality that breeds stupidity and sheeple. Your mind is the most important tool you have. If you stop using it, it will atrophy.

Question everything.

I lived in pa, and even in the summer at its hottest before I was cutting I wore long sleeve hooded sweatshirts year round and no one ever said anything to me, I still wear long sleeves in the summer and Ive never had anyone say anything about it, even now while I live in florida. But the florida people do make comments about my sweat pants.... I think they just think its weird.

I have to self injure in places that can't be seen. Not only does my mom insist that I wear short sleeves in the summer, but I'm in theatre and marching band. For theatre I can't choose my costume, and for marching band I would pass out if I didn't wear short sleeves.

So unfortunately, long sleeves aren't an option, but I prefer them anyways even if I don't self injure on my arms. I get really cold really easily, and I just like the way they look.

I don't think people notice long sleeves so much in the uk because it is ALWAYS cold.

That said, really thin cardigans, or the thin long sleeve denim shirts left open over a vest top, or those kaftan things (e.g http://www.monsoon.co.uk/Kaftans/Dai.../invt/69727930) are the best options in summer I think because they are really summery anyway and so draw less attention than say, a black hoody.

Or if legs are not scarred then a long sleeve top with shorts or a skirt.

I've never really been asked about wearing long sleeves in summer.

Yeah i'm also from the UK, and whilst a lot of the time in summer, its not necessarily cold, its not really hot. We dont get a lot of hot days...
I suppose it will look weird, i've never not worn t-shirts in summer, but i guess no one will say anything unless i complain about being hot. I am kind of worried, but tbh most people are not in tune with SH and will not be thinking that at all.

No

At walmart I found some really light weight hoodies (guys section)
Some people sunburn easily, and that can be a reason to cover up in the heat.

As long as it's somewhat weather appropriate (IE not a winter coat in july/january (depends on hemisphere)) most people don't notice

I tend to wear shirts over vest tops, so that looks quite summery any way. And if anyone asks, it's to avoid getting sunburnt or because it's cooler to wear something loose, long sleeved. Both of which could be true.

The thing I'm not looking forward to this summer is the leg problem. Wearing jeans all summer isn't going to be so easy to pass off. Saying that though if this summer is anything like last summer everyone's going to be wrapped up!

I do automatically think about SH if I see someone in long sleeves, but that's only because I SH too. Most people don't think about that.

I do wonder that, but then maybe that's because I AM someone who has self-injured, and someone who hadn't would likely think nothing of it?

I am this person.

Seriously, though, in my experience most people will never look twice if you wear long sleeves even in summer--especially if they're used to seeing you in long sleeves. I've worn my hooded sweatshirts for so long no one asks me about it anymore. Besides, even if it's very hot out, most people will assume you're covering up against sunburn. When it's hot, I find it useful to wear a couple of loose layers; that way when I start to feel too warm I can take something off and still be covered up.

Also, just a tip...but I've noticed that when I tried to change it up and wear different long-sleeved covers, I got more questions. But now I only have a couple of hoodies I change between, and no one seems to think twice. It's as if having just the two similar-looking ones makes people think I'm making a personal statement of what looks good, rather than a cover-up attempt. I'm not sure if there's wisdom in that or not...it's just something I've observed.

This brings back such bad memories.
I think it was the summer before last... my friend's came round unexpected on the hottest day of the year to go for a walk.
I went outside in what I was wearing... jeans and a black jacket and my friends stopped dead at the end of the street and just went 'Get home right now and get changed, are you insane? You'll boil to death in that' bad times, it was VERY hot.

I think because we self harm, we are more questioning, like if WE see somebody if long sleeves in hot weather we'd be like 'I wonder if they self harm' but if it's somebody who doesn't probably don't even notice... unless you are sweating and look like you're about to die.

Well here I know for a fact that you get looked at weird because we have very short summers so everyone tries to get the best out of every nice day. Under armor is amazing for covering up in the summer it never gets too warm and if you wear it under a short sleved shirt it doesn't look like your trying to cover up. And yes arm warmers get more questions than long sleves.

I doubt most people would think anything of it. I actually think always wearing long sleeves is less suspicious then suddenly wearing them, just because it seems like you are someone who gets cold easily or something. People tend to not be that observant anyway, unless they have some reason to think about it, like if they have self injured themselves.

I also agree that it depends what you are wearing. A black hoodie is definitely more suspicious then a light cardigan or summer-y looking shirt. Super light athletic gear meant to protect athletes from the sun is also great for an outdoorsy activity. I actually wear stuff like that anyway because I am pretty sun conscious. It's amazing, I swear you actually stay cooler than if you were wearing something skimpy because it's so ultra light.
