What is the reason you started self harming? Dealing with difficult situations in life, I didn't know how else to stop the pain. It didnt start of consciously, but escalated from there.
Does self harm help you feel in control of your life? Sometimes, It along with eating problems, helps when I feel like I have no controll over anything else in my life.
Does anyone know that you self harm? Some If so, did you tell them willingly or did they find out? First person founf out after 4 years, I was at a low point and couldnt deal with anything anymore and he happened to be there at the time when I needed to talk, so he was willingly, but most people after that were either told by others against my will or found out some other way.
What is the reason you don’t/didn’t tell anyone? Combination of shame, fear of the reaction and the fact that it was such a personal reaction to things I had never told anyone about.

What is the reason you started self harming? I started subconsciously, as a way of coping I guess, it took 9 Months of it to realise what I was doing. I then started deliberately.

What is the reason you started self harming? To be incontrol of feelings and cope with life. I started when i was 7 but back then i never knew it was self harm. I also started to deal with the feeling from physical and emotional abuse from my parents and grandparents and used it to cope with being bullied because i grew up in the army.
Does self harm help you feel in control of your life? Sometimes but my main reason for self harm is that if i hurt myself the worst no one can hurt me more than i already have.

Fear of a negative reaction (which I got anyway) and fear of emotional conversations with people I didn't want to have them with!

What is the reason you started self harming? All I knew when I started self-harming was that it took the pain away. When I cut, the bad feelings went away.

If so, did you tell them willingly or did they find out? I told my friends willingly. But mom and my sister just found out. They saw marks on me. I tried to lie about what happened but they weren't convinced. So I confessed.

my mother is nasty, i wasnt able to show my emotions cos "your just being stupid and overreacting" so i learnt that shouldnt cry or react, its just easier to bottle things up and then i quickly learnt that sh acting as a huge relief of all those feelings.....13 years later its still got a hold of me.

What is the reason you started self harming? I was struggling to cope with uni and felt panicked by the thought of what happenes next. I didn't know how to talk about how i was feeling and it just overwhelmed me, i never made a conscious decision to SH it just happened.

What is the reason you started self harming? Mainly abuse - it meant that however much other people hurt me, I could always hurt myself more. It kinda just developed from there.
Does self harm help you feel in control of your life? I've SHed for 10 years now, so it's kinda always been there. I feel almost lost without it. So yes - I guess it does help me feel in control.
Does anyone know that you self harm? Quite a few of my friends, the staff at my old school did, and my boss does (although she's kinda one of my best friends anyway).
If so, did you tell them willingly or did they find out? Most of them found out. I had a bit of an incident at school a couple of years ago when a lot of people found out. I willingly told my boss, but she'd already worked it out anyway.

Anger, I think. Frustrations at my family and school life turned on myself. Started with scratching and rubbing my skin... then progressed from there.

What is the reason you started self harming? I started cutting on impulse. I had little reason for it, I hadn't "learnt" it from anyone. Although, I may possibly have self-harmed in other ways before I stared cutting.

I felt it was the only way I could keep in control of my emotions. I deserved to hurt for how I am.

Yes and no. Self harm makes me feel better in a way that nobody else can. I don't want to talk about how I feel. I hate people asking 'what's wrong'. They're my problems for me to deal with. But Self Harm controls your life too. Fighting the urge to hurt yourself rules your life.

Self harmed when I was around 15 for nearly a year without anyone ever knowing other than friends at school. When I started self harming again the next time, I managed to keep it a secret for about half a year. People were aware of the self harm through a 'rough patch' I had but currently, as the problems aren't showing on the outside so much, people are more or less unaware.

They found out. If it was up to me, they would never have known.

Things got so much worse when family found out. I didn't tell them for a reason - I didn't want them to know. I prefer how things are now where I can use SH to make myself feel better and I don't get quizzed on why I've done it. When people know, they treat you differently and make you feel isolated.
