Apple. I don't have the time to spend everyday trying to recover lost files or trying to trick a PC into doing what I want it to do. I also don't have the money to spend on computer repairs which is what my parent's PC needs at least twice a year.
Forget the risk and take the fall if it's what you want it's worth it all
sorry your right, it wasnt microsoft with first GUI.
What I was trying to think of was Microsoft first wrote BASIC (the most common computer programming language) for the personal computer and his idea took off big style. Then he made his fortune as he talked IBM into letting microsoft retain the licensing rights (which was unheard off at the time) and then MSDOS took off (which was a huge step forward too).
meh history of computers at degre level is boringing so i didnt maintain much of it.
However in regards to a mac vs ms I still vote ms. MAC is good if you want a basic comp to surf the web on but not much else. And If i was only using mine to surf the web, I think I would rather buy a web book for £100 and replace it frequently than spend £1000+ on a mac. But each to their own i suppose.
ive heard better things about mac, but i think thats because theyve done awesome marketing.
im perfectly content with windows 7, and its REALLY similar to OS X.
so... i was happy with paying $600 less for a computer of similar quality (i got this one on black friday, if i hadnt it really woulda only been $300 less or something)
windows is nothing but glorified spyware that people are paying to be lumbered with.
I know, I feel exactly the same. I honestly don't get why it is so popular. When we had windows, back in the old days, 5 years ago, we had to get each computer repaired at least 5 times a year, and the cost got too much so we just spent extra on a Macintosh. And compared to Windows technical support, it's the BEST! When you ring they are so helpful and will do ANYTHING to fix your problem. I rang them after getting my first Mac to ask about wireless connectivity, and they told me instantly! I've had no other problems since then, and I've replaced it with a Macbook Air now but I still use my old Macbook occasionally (its 10.4.11 Tiger).
Windows crashes all the time and can't cope with more than two windows open at once. So, I couldn't even use MSN and go on Youtube at the same time. That was with 2GB of memory. My first Mac had 2GB of memory, could open 12 windows at once with no loss of speed. And it's a-maz-ing for video and audio editing.
I guess if you
- want a reliable computer
- better specs
- more enjoyable experience
- no costly repeat repairs
- are willing to spend a little bit extra for a HELL OF A LOT more
... then you go for a Mac.
I guess if you
- don't mind slow performance
- don't mind frequent crashes, loss of data and work
- hate quality computers
- aren't willing to spend more money for quality
... then you go for Windows.
Each to their own, I guess. But I prefer Mac. Always will. Windows are basically selling you viruses.

If money wasn't an issue and there was some magic switch to make all my software and games run on a mac, then I'd probably get one
But with my windows PC I can upgrade it a little at a time, tri-boot it xp/vista/linux so I can use whatever takes my fancy or I need at the time, and most importantly all my stuff works, it also hasn't crashed since thursday afternoon which was actually my own shoddy pc building rather than windows causing the problem and that's with vista
Macs are pretty, good for arty things (dunno if pc's have caught up there), everyone says easy to use, and I have to admit I quite like them when I've had to look at them, but I'm locked into a Pc just by using one for so long I have to much that just wont go over, eventually I'll switch to linux or mac with windows emulation for games, but until that works well enough for everything with messing about, its PC and windows for me.
At some point mac/windows is going to turn into the x-box/ps3 thing where people have both just because they want something on each that they can't get on the other

You see, and I dont mean this offensively. But this is probably why you prefare macs. If you needed to pay someone to repair your computer that often, then you didnt have the knoweldge to repair it yourself, which is often very easy to do. For example, I recntly spent some time working for the tech guys in PC world. They charge you £50 to set up a networtk (that would take me 15 mins) and £40 to recover a lost file (again prob do it in about 5 mins) To pay to get any computer repair is going to cost. But if you know what you are doing you can do it yourself pretty easy.
And if you dont have the knowledge of computers then it is unlikley that you will be running advanced software and so a MAC is perfect for your needs.
And no Tom, I dont think they do. They probably know how to do it, but I doubt even geeks use it unless they actully want to look geeky lol
Apples are amazing, if I had been allowed a more expensive laptop for school I would've got one, but I ended up sticking with windows :) They're smoother in shape and interface, too, so much nicer to work with, especially if you're in to graphic design/art.
Basically, macs are for people who dont know how to keep a normal computer running well. Who may do silly things without realising it and could easily be tricked by malware. They stay stable because they dont let you change important things and keep you stuck to default settings.
Whilst I agree that Macs are expensive, and it is easy to get something with much higher specs for the same price, I have to disagree with the above. I know perfectly well how to keep a 'normal' computer running, I have never had any problems with any of the PCs I have used. I just prefer to use a Mac, I find it less clunky. I would say those who are 'computer illiterate' are much more likely to be using a Windows OS, than a Mac.

I agree. I studied computer programming for a year in college (Windows OS's) so I know a lot about it. I know how to repair most errors, and I can recover files, defragment hard-drives etc... but the repairs I was talking about on the last page of this topic were far too complicated, even for somebody like me who is certainly NOT computer illiterate. Macs are expensive BUT they're not for beginners! Macs run a lot more software that is far more complicated that Windows software, making Windows the best choice for computer illiterate people/beginners.
But anyway, I like Macs, plain and simple. Superior quality for the win!
Oh, and Daemon, just so you know, Macs do let you customize your computer... if you know how! I've made my Mac so much better by tweaking it a little bit... and whaddya know, no viruses and no hard-drive crashes or anything!

I've never used a Mac before. I started using the computer when I was 7 years old and ever since then it's always been Windows. I'm obsessive about customizing everything from the desktop wallpaper to the shell and sound and everything..I'm not sure if that's possible with a Mac. I do love the mouses though! I love the material Apple uses, that shiny plastic smooth one and the mouse has only one big transparent button? Macs seem so alien to me. :P
Man,I remember when I first saw those bulky mac desktops with the different colors! I ALWAYS wanted one of those but instead my dad bought us a Windows/Compaq desktop that came with different colors but my dad is boring and he chose the default gray/purple..still loved it though, now it's all old and slow and barely works at all anymore.
