Triggering (Sexual Abuse) - Reporting child sexual abuse years later

Erm when i was 3 till about 9 years old i'm 22 now i was sexually abused by my uncle. Last night when saw my counsellor i told about one pritty bad night. He said he thought i should told to the police. But I dont know what would happen if i did tell the police. I dont know how the police handle things like this.

Nor do I, but I'm sure someone else here will know what the procedure is. I just wanted to say that I think you're really brave for speaking to your counselor about this and I am really sorry to hear about what you went through. I think going to the police would be a good idea so your uncle will get his punishment but I don't dispute that it would be difficult to go through it with the police.

I think telling the police would be good if you think it would help you. Even years later there can sometimes be something done about it. And if you report it and it doesn't get a conviction, it still might make your uncle think about what he did. However, don't ever let anyone guilt you into telling the police either. Do what's best for YOU.

I'd imagine it might be a bit different from here, but usually you give a police report. Then it'll get passed onto an investigator who'll get you to explain everything in detail. Then court..

You go into the police station and say you want to report something. The person at the desk will ask you what, and you have to be strong and say "childhood sexual abuse" or something similar. A woman will then take you into a room and take your details, his details (as much as you know; if he's living with children, working with children etc) and a brief overview of what happened. You'll then have to give a video interview, which is fine, you won't even notice you're being filmed! It is tough talking about it though, and you'll be asked for a lot of awkward and often disgusting detail. But you can ask to leave the room/get a drink/fresh air at anytime and the officers will usually be lovely and compassionate. Unfortunately, that's only how far I've got into reporting it so far. xx

I've been through the whole process and survived! I rang the child protection team to start off because my main abuser was a school inspector so children were in danger. They assign someone to deal with the case and usually meet with you to discuss and decide whether there is a possibility of a successful conviction. Once you have been assigned a Police officer they will help you through the whole process. I found my Officer really kind and she really helped me through the whole case.
