Some more coping methods that are used to resist SH urges :)

I have recently started seeing someone from PCAMHs and she gave me sheets on resisting urges to self injure. Participants used these methods at least once and there is a percentage to show how effective the people thought they were, I thought I would copy the sheet out onto here because I’m sure it would help people trying to get rid of urges Some you may have come across before but reading the list is a distraction it itself! And even though some of the coping methods have been rated low, it's always worth trying anything out I have removed a few which I personally thought weren't appropriate to post.

-Keeping busy. (82.4%)

-Being around friends. (80.0%)

-Talking to someone about how you feel. (74.3%)

-Writing about how you feel. (74.3%)

-Talking to friends (71.4%)

-Interacting with someone who is nice to you. (68.6%)

-Thinking of someone who cares about you. (65.7%)

-Finding someone who is understanding. (65.7%)

-Doing sports or exercise recreationally. (65.7%)

-Listening to music. (62.9%)

-Anticipating others' reactions to self-harm. (60.0%)

-Being around people. (57.1%)

-Doing mindless activities. {Eg. Sudoku, you can find Sudoku on the distractions page} (48.6%)

-Reading. (42.9%)

-Writing poetry. (42.9%)

-Finding a less chaotic environment. (40.0%)

-Taking a hot bath or shower. (40.0%)

-Thinking about how much it will hurt. (39.4%)

-Thinking about others with similar problems. (37.1%)

-Receiving outpatient counselling. (37.1%)

-Removing the means/instrument typically used to self-harm from home. (35.5%)

-Talking to your doctor/professional. (34.3%)

-Religion/spirituality. (34.3%)

-Closing eyes and thinking calming thoughts. (34.3%)

-Setting limits on frequency on self-harm. (34.3%)

-Doing household chores. (34.3%)

-Relaxing. (28.6%)

-Chatting on internet. (20.0%)

-Organized sports. (18.2%)

-Working with paint, clay, play-doh. (17.1%)

-Playing a musical instrument. (14.3%)

-Learning something new. (8.6%)

-Drawing on arms with red pen/marker (8.6%)

-Massaging the area you want to harm. (5.7%)

-Cooking. (5.7%)

-Mutilating fruit or vegetable or other food. (2.9%)

-Group therapy. (2.9%)

-Pastoral/religious counselling (2.9%)

-Chiropractor (0.0%)

-Acupuncture (0.0%)

I hope they have been helpful

Thank you! It's really interesting to see the percentage ratings, I think every CAMHS and CMHT should offer a sheet like that.

With regards to fruit mutilation, I've had some pretty nice results with a 14lb sledge hammer and a raid of the fruit bowl... Good way to get things out of the system... and all over your shirt, up the walls, on your hammer....

And he brought me into a vast farmlands of our own midwest. And as we descended, cries of impending doom rose from the soil. One thousand, nay a million voices full of fear. And terror possesed me then. And I begged, "Angel of the Lord, what are these tortured screams?" And the angel said unto me, "These are the cries of the carrots, the cries of the carrots! -- Not a vegetarian

i like the playing a musical instrument, learning a new song on the piano can occupy me for days!

also, the fruit mutilation.. what i do sometimes is carve flowers and butterflies and make a bouquet of fruit for the people i care about and when there is no fruit in the house i use a bar of soap and try and make an intricate sculpture :) it can actually be quite fun!
