General Medical Question - Non Urgent - Irregular periods
Would it be a problem health wise if I was having irregular periods. Ive probably had 6 periods in the last 2 years. Ive had my hormones checked more than once and its fine. The only thing that I think it is, is the anti-psychotic Ive been on. My weight is low, but not unhealthy (well not that I know of).
Im torn because I dont want to change medication and its quite nice not to have to suffer due to periods, but am I actually doing damage to my body by having so few periods?

I don't think that u are doing damage to ur body by the lack of periods.
Someone will be able to advise u better, Im sure. Just try not to worry too much.
Have you spoken to a doctor about this? They may be able to ease ur fears.
Just wanted u to know that im thinking of u x x

Do you have a low bmi? (dont post the actul number)
But yes your right anti psychotics can effect your periods.

If your BMI is in the 'underweight' category then that is enough to affect your periods. Generally having 6 in 2 yrs, though far from perfect, isn't the worst that people have (if spaced relatively evenly) though it is far from ideal. However, as it has been long-term, if your doctors not looked into it recently then I'd get them to just because I'd be worried if your oestrogen levels are really low and the effects this may have on your bone density. But yep, as KimB says, they can be affected my meds such as anti-psychotics and depending on the effect on your body it may be that something needs to be given to conteract low levels of some hormones you may have if you're not getting the normal fluctuations.

Thanks for your replies. To be honest I don't know where I fall in the BMI level. Basically according to my scales at home (I have 2), they both give the same weight. With that weight and my height Im in the underweight category. However when Im weighed at my GP's the weight comes up higher putting me in the healthy weight category. The weight Im at now hasn't been like this for the last 2 years, I weighed quite a bit more back then. I guess I will see how things go and then get my gp to look at things again or talk to my consultant about my medication.

I'd go by what the scales at your GPs say (so long as you've been weighed there around the same time as at home and remembering that your weight can fluctuate by up to a a couple of kgs every day depending on the time of day, what you've eaten/ drunk/ whether you've been to the toilet or not, they do all add up to making quite a big normal difference in an adult) as ones at GPs are often more reliable (though not always) than ones at home which are often cheaper and whether they lay flat on the floor or eben at a slight angle can make a big difference.
I'd definately not stress over it but I would discuss it with your doctors and if you need the anti-psychotics it's probably best if you stay on them and if needs be they can prescribe you something else if they feel you have a problem with hormone regulation eg 1 of many different forms of hormonal contraceptives depending on what may or may not be going on. But for some people, having a period that infrequently is normal and for them will cause no problems.

Hi again,
I know this is going over an old subject matter and Ive already had some good advice.
I guess it just concerns me ever so slightly about how infrequent my periods are. My last one was 5 months ago. My hormones levels are all normal and the anti-psychotics Im on haven't raised my prolactin levels, which could have been a side effect of the meds.
Do you think its worth being refered onto someone more specialised, no one seems bothered about the infrequent periods.
My weight is in the healthy bmi range, but Ive been unable to put on any weight in the last 5 months and that isnt due to not trying. I eat more than enough each day.
Thanks

As you've obviously seen a doctor about this to get your hormone levels checked out we can not give you further advice on this and it is something you need to speak to them about. However it would be worth them knowing that it is still bothering you so I would go back.
Other than this, as you have/ are under the care of doctors for this it is against the rules for us to answer further questions on they are the ones that have your medical notes, the ones that have spoken and examined you, they are further qualified than what we are and having seen you anyway makes a big difference. As well as this we cannot say anything/ give advice that potentially goes against/ contradicts what they have said in the past and therefore, as this is against the rules of the forum I am going to lock this thread now.
If you want to discuss this decision with me then feel free to PM me regarding it and I can talk to you further about it,
KimA
