I'm not a vegetarian.
I don't really eat a lot of meat, though. I've never cooked meat for myself, and doubt I will. I can't be bothered with it and just, prefer vegetarian food. I'll eat it if I'm with family / friends who are cooking it but even then I'm really fussy. I can't eat big 'chunks' of meat like steak and chops and whatnot. It's nothing to do with it being meat, specifically, I just never grew out of being really fussy about what texture the food is, how much it has to be chewed etc (lol) and a lot of meat falls into the not okay category. It's ridiculous, really, but it makes it awkward going to people's houses. SO. I'm thinking it might just be easier to become vegetarian and be done with it.

mmhhmm, ostrich is very good for you! It tastes like beef but WAY lower in cholesterol.. And when done by a pro it actually tastes so much better than beef!

As a little kid you believed in fairytales,
that fantasy of what your life would be: white dress; prince charming who would carry you away to a castle on a hill.
You closed your eyes and had complete and utter faith.
Eventually you grow up. One day you open your eyes and the fairy tale disappears.
But the thing is, it's hard to let go of that fairytale entirely because almost everyone has that smallest bit of hope, of faith,
that one day they will open their eyes and it will come true.

I was raised in a meat-eating family. I don't really remember why I decided to become a vegetarian at 14. I didn't eat much meat to begin with though. I think most of it was me being bored one christmas vacation. Plus I thought it would be healthier and more economic. I also happen to be an animal-lover. I'm sure this factor had something to do with it as well. Anyway, I wouldn't go back. I hate the taste and texture of meat. Just the smell repulses me. I find more flavour in fruits and veggies. I have nothing against people who do eat meat, but this is my lifestyle and I love it.

So actually if people didn't eat meat the carbon footprint caused by cows would reduce vastly. I think you've misunderstood the way agriculture works just a little bit here. It's not like there were millions of herds of cattle just randomly roaming the UK that farmers then captured and housed in fields, the amount of cows only exists because of the meat industry.
Actually - wrong, cows only exist for the DIARY industry. Steers/bullocks exist mainly for the meat industry, and there's nowhere near as many of those as cows in the world.

Diary industry? Like filofaxes and thing?:P I'm assuming these are leather bound diarys
Yes there are more dairy industry cows, however if you take into account companies (like Mcdonalds for example) chopping down carbon sinks such as tropical forest for beef farms, those cows have a larger carbon footprint than British dairy cows that graze on grasslands that have always been grasslands. Also cows don't ONLY exist for the dairy industry, if that was the case why do we have different breeds of cattle for beef and for dairy?

Are you a vegetarian by choice or were you brought up as a vegetarian by your parents/guardians?

By choice -- the rest of my family are meat eaters. I stopped eating meat sometime in high school, I think when I was about 16 or so, although I still eat fish and other sea food (except octopus and eel because they're cute... although people tend to think I'm nuts for thinking eels are cute, so it doesn't need to be said ).

Do you not eat meat because you dislike the taste, or the way the animals are treated? If the later, would you eat meat if the animals were killed in a more ethical way way? (I know they're killed in a pretty ethical way already, but yeah)
Or is it neither of those reasons? Please state if so.

I never particularly loved meat, so overall it wasn't that hard to give up (although steamed pork buns, hamburgers, bacon, and my grandmother's pot roast were a bit harder)... I originally stopped eating meat mainly because I thought about it too much and it just seemed gross to me to think about something I was eating having been part of an animal. That made it easy to give up eating meat as well, cause I was kind of grossed out by it and really just didn't want to eat it anyway. There are also other reasons, the biggest being that it bothers me to kill animals no matter how it's done, and even though I can justify eating meat in principle (like I can argue that it's natural for people to eat meat and all that, and as long as the animals are treated humanely it's fine, but when it comes down to it, I can't help thinking about how some individual cow or pig or chicken or whatever had to die to make a given piece of meat and that piece of meat used to be part of that individual animal). And there are other reasons as well, but I have to go to class now.

I first tried to be vegetarian 10 years ago, lasted all of 2 years and then my cardiologist told me to start eating meat again because my heart was not fully healed from surgery. So i started eating it again being not very happy about it and then I became very tired and lethargic, falling asleep in class, collapsing on the floor to go to sleep etc.
I got blood tests and it showed very low iron levels so i changed my diet and cut out meat again (by this time I really didn't care for what my cardiologist said). After I cut out meat I stopped collapsing aand falling asleep in class, iron levels shot right back up again, had an appointment with my cardiologist and he said my heart has gone from being moderate-sever to moderate-mild.
My love and respect for animals, animal rights, human rights and the environment has showed me nothing but respect in return :)

Well, ya know, there are lots of leather-bound diaries around
And actually i try not to think about mc donalds lol. yuck.
we have different breeds due to different ability to breed at diff times of year, milk type (nowadays we even have a1 milk and a2 milk type breeds....which i think is pointless... but hey ho) milk amounts blah blah.
and of course because some just look prettier than others.

Ex vegetarian, current meat eater coming through *parts crowds* as such I'm going to rebel and answer both sets of questions. Ooooh.

Are you a vegetarian by choice or were you brought up as a vegetarian by your parents/guardians?
Was by choice.

Are any of you ex-vegetarians who now love a nice bit of a meat? If so, what caused you to start eating meat?
I started off eating meat, stopped because I felt mean eating animals then started up again when I missed burgers too much :)

Do you not eat meat because you dislike the taste, or the way the animals are treated? If the later, would you eat meat if the animals were killed in a more ethical way way?
Even as a current meat eater now I would prefer ethical ways to be more widespread and for keeping animals in anything other than free range conditions to be illegal. However yeah, it a was because I felt mean on the animals.

And two questions for all meat eaters:

Have you ever thought about becoming a vegetarian? If so, what stopped you becoming one?
I was one, liked meat too much, discovered free range, changed my opinion.

What's your favourite type of meat? Aberdeen angus beef burger all the way.

As a meat lover, I'm not actually that keen on bacon.
I mean, it's nice, yeah, but if I'm going to eat a pig, I'd much rather eat it in a different way.

Hardly weird, I'm sure there is lots of people who don't have a favourite. I love all meat, I just happen to love steak that little bit more than the rest.

Are you a vegetarian by choice or were you brought up as a vegetarian by your parents/guardians?: I am totally one by choice. There are NO other vegetarians in my family, no lie.

Do you not eat meat because you dislike the taste, or the way the animals are treated? If the later, would you eat meat if the animals were killed in a more ethical way way? (I know they're killed in a pretty ethical way already, but yeah) Well it first started off like 7 years ago, so I was around 11, so back then I just stopped eating meat because I simply felt bad for the cute animals. It's still that way now, but I know some places are so cruel to their animals, it just makes me so sick. I've seen pictures and everything about abused animals and I could just never eat them ever again. I wish I could help them all. And I am just so grossed out by meat now, I would probably get sick if I ate it after all these years.

I'm a veggie, I made the choice when I was about 10, I was a bit of a crazy kid and decided I was gonna save all the animals one day and that was my first step. I'm not as naive now but I still couldn't ever eat it, I do still love animals and I just couldn't eat one. Even if they weere killed more humaney as you said, I still couldn't live with myself if I did. But that's my own personal choice and I've nothing against anyone who does nor do I mind people eating it in front of me, I just chose not to that's all.

In the defense of meat eaters health. Most of the negative health impacts from eating meat comes from commercially processed or ill prepared meats. Buying meat at a large grocery chain like Marsh or Meijer is where the "bad health" meats come from. Farmers markets who make it a point to NOT feed their cows corn, steroids, and any number of chemicals to do whatever to the cow is where to go if you want good quality beef. With that said, I've not ate beef in almost 7 years.

I personally make it a point to not eat any meat that I have not killed myself, as such, my diet consist mainly of Deer, Squirrel, Duck, Rabbit, and Fish. I know where these animals came from, I know these animals aren't roided up on some dubious chemicals. Finally I process the meat myself so I know how the meat was cut and how it was transported. Hunting/catching your own meat saves LOADS of cash AND gives you a hobby.

Also from a male health standpoint, taking animal protein out of your diet lowers your testosterone levels.

But equally eating too many cheap chickens pumped full of hormones can raise your oestrogen levels and can be a contributing factor in gynecomastia.

What's your favourite type of meat? I for one, love a good sirloin steak.
1) Yes, all the time. Why not? Because I live with a family of carnivores, and it's hard to find anything that has any sort of protine in it besides cheese, and even i can't live on cheese
2) Uh.. i really could live with out any sort of meat. >P i don't like it
Though i went through a period for a WHILE that i couldn't eat meat atall, physically. i think it was eating disorder related. *shrug*
