I just read through this whole thread, and I would just like to say thank you flowerfairy, this is the first i have heard of this cup business. I think people are being far too judgemental to someone who was just trying to put the info out there. I really think stuff like this should be brought up.
For those who say its "discusting.. vile." Its words like that which make women feel inferior to men, or discusted with themselves. Half the population have a period every month. I am not jumping for joy over my period, and yeah its not pleasant, but I am not going to call myself disgusting or vile for being able to bear children. (and I dont even know if ill have kids)
I only have 4 periods a year (yay the pill) and when I do, so far I have been going with tampons. I dont like to wear pads but I am not going to tell the people who do choose them that they are gross, and I hope they wouldnt do the same to me. There are ups and downs to all products us women have to use.
I am all for saving the environment. I think the people who say things like "I dont give a crap about the environment" are probably the same people who litter, dont recycle and are going to be the ones responsible for our great grandkids living in a horrible world.. if its still left. Like I said before, half the population are using pads or tampons so yeah, this cup seems liek it would cut down on ALOT of waste. This is the first I have heard of this cup so I guess I have something to think about. Thanks for the info!

Please explain how I crossed a line? My comment makes sense. I could go in to how people are continually looking down on women with the subconcious view that anything coming from a vagina is 'gross' rather than simply 'natural' the feminist in me is screaming but I'm not that arsey so I won't let her out.
There are hardly any 'horror stories' surrounding the mooncup, so I don't know where people are getting them from.
Heidi, if you've been meaning to get one then just do it. Next time you walk past a boots, go get one. I order thee :P
If you're out in public you can just empty it and pop it back in, or you can wipe it or if you're really fussy you can take a bottle of water into the cubicle and give it a quick rinse.
There is no way tampons are more hygenic than reusable methods. Especially tampons, there's already been posts about what they absorb and what's actually in them.
Main points about the mooncup..
One mooncup holds 3 times more than tampons or pads so it is really good for heavy periods.
There are 2 sizes, one for women who are under 30/haven't given birth and another for women over 30/have given birth.
It is only really recommended if your hymen has been broken, as use of the mooncup will cause it to break.
This is a link to the websites FAQ page.
And if you don't trust the website because it's obviously bias then you could just ask here and people who use the mooncup will answer, I guess.
crazygirl, i dont think it was meant to be taken as a sh comment. I think its just the fact that alot of the people are grossed out by "period blood" but not grossed out if they cut there.. lets say knee, after falling down the stairs or something. however i do see what you mean.

No, it was a reference to self harm, but not to mock it (Why would I mock something I do myself? I'm not stupid) It was more to highlight the hypocrisy of peoples comments.
oo, whoopsie.
totally didnt click in my head
i must be sleepy lol
now i get it though, makes sense

I feel inferior to a man because I think using a cup sounds vile and I don't want to do it? I hate my period. I don't feel inferior to a man becasue I hate my period... I'm willing to bet, no one else who has said that feels inferior to men. We're not calling ourselves vile. I think you've completely misunderstood what we've been saying.

And again. I don't litter. I recycle. And I completely resent the fact that becasue I would rather use a pad or a tampon and throw it away then use a cup or washable pads you say I'm going to be the one responsible for a future horrible world. Maybe the thread wasn't judgemental (alot of it has come across that way though) but you certainly made it so.
By harping on about how bad pads are for the environment, what purpose does that serve but to possibly make those of us who use them feel bad? Well, I don't give a stuff. If my pads are going to ruin the world, so be it. I'm sure all those cigarettes butts that are out there are great for the environment. And I bet there are more cigarette butts then there are sanitary pads. If we don't want to use them, fine! If you do, good for you. But don't shove it down our throats!!!!
"Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
I think the point about being inferior to men possibly meant that by being ashamed of periods, by referring to them as disgusting, vile, or gross, it does make people frustrated to be female, or disgusted to have something that is very natural to females. Periods, whilst yes, annoying at times, are a very natural, very healthy thing, and not something to be hated or despised or not talked about, but rather something to be accepted and - and maybe I'm getting a little over the top here :P - possibly something to be enjoyed. After all, it's a statement of your health and reproductivity.
I don't know if that was how the op intended it, but that was how I felt that comment was to be interpreted.
"I dont like to wear pads but I am not going to tell the people who do choose them that they are gross, and I hope they wouldnt do the same to me. There are ups and downs to all products us women have to use."
^did you read that part? im not going to tell you what to use at all. im just voicing my opinion about the entire concept. it was in no way meant to hurt peoples feelings. if i hurt yours sorry. it was unintentional. but now you have just hurt mine on purpose.
and where did the cigarette comment come from? i agree? smoking is not only bad for the environment, but for your health as well.

As a male, my opinion is that it is up to a person to choose what they are comfortable with. Yes, pads and tampons might have environmental consequnces and health risks but if someone is happy with their choice, then I think it is up to them. There are much more harmful things that we humans do to the planet that we can be criticised for

tl;dr, but i don't get how periods are that gross either & i don't mind mooncups, or the idea of them at least.
gross thread title & first post though.
Whats the difference between the blood sitting in a cup, and the blood flowing out to sit in your knickers? personally, I would prefer it was all kept inside.
It's kind of like this.
Imagine you've just spilled fruit punch. You can either:
A) Get a paper towel and wipe it up. It gets absorbed in the paper, so even if you can't throw that paper towel away immediately, at least the punch isn't still sloshing around, ready to make a disgusting sticky mess at any time.
or B) Save the environment! Collect all the juice back into a cup, where it jiggles around all day getting all warm and fetid until you can find a place to dump it out. Then, after being rid of the contents, you still have to find a place to wash and store this cup, so you can use it next time this happens.
Some of you are so uptight about your periods. Kind of like tampons.
I don't see anything offensive about the original post, even though I don't use those products personally. It's good to know you have options.
Seriously. Ride your bike or walk, don't drive. Use recyclable grocery bags. Don't litter. Plant a tree. Stop being so melodramatic and acting like the world is going to end and we're all going to die because we don't like to re-use our smelly, bloody pads.
Perhaps it'd be a good idea to take a deep breath before we react with our emotions, give ourselves a moment to simmer down.
Personally, I've been looking into Diva cups. I might get along better with them than tampons, but I've not had any problems with tampons personally. I hate using pads, it makes me feel like I'm wearing a diaper. Perhaps homemade pads might be different and blood is super easy to wash out, but I'm just not willing to put that effort in. I'd rather use a tampon or maybe a diva cup.
