Does it make a difference where you do it? I mean like, is it much worse to go across your wrists or is it bad wherever you chose? Only, I think there's this sorta hype about wrists because people immediately associate it with suicide and stuff but for me it just feels better.... I've always told myself that it's self harm and it's bad wherever you're doing it but am I being really dangerous?
Also, what makes you decide? Is it convenience? Or does it just feel right in one place or the other? For me it's definitely the latter, but what d'you think?

I cannot self harm anywere near my wrist. I cant even stand the thought.
I can only self harm on my arm. I do it on my theigh to but it dosent feel as good as it does on my arm.
tbh i dont think it matters where you cut because its still self harm
when i started it was for convinience so my arms but then once people found out and were checking it became like a game of hide a seek - not that it was fun.

When I first started to SI, I only cut on my lower arm and wrist area. It just didn't even occur to me to do it anywhere else since that's the stereotypical area, you know?
I quit cutting for about 2 1/2 years, and when I came back to it, I did it only on my upper arm because I really wanted to hide it and it did a lot for me.
I got tired of doing it there, though... I've tried my legs and now I'm back to my lower arm. I never wanted to cut there again, but... I guess I am doing it anyway. =/

Reason: please see to my post further down the thread

Hey guys :) not to be the p*ss on your parade or anything - but please do be careful regarding tipsharing on this thread, as talking about where is best/safest, etc. to cut is against the rules.
I've ran across and down my lower inside right arm and left a bit of a mess, that was a place i never wanned to do unless i was desperate i've also done hips, chest, stomache, arms and legs. It doesn't matter where, you're still hurting yourself, i would say that how deep and what you use is more important, you have to be careful and no matter what, if you are worried that you have gone to far ALWAYS see a doctor or go to A&E.

The best place i find is the lower arm but i find it to hard to hide so its more my upper arm but in summer my stomach which does not work that much
Don't walk behine me I might got you lost!
Don't walk in front of me I may not follow you!
Don't walk beside me the path is to small!
All we can do is walk our own paths, remember your not alone because we are all walking our own paths together!
hey all.
can i please remind you of the following rule:
Quote:
Please do not share any information on methods to self-harm or any tips, including the best ways/places to self-harm. Discussion of techniques that people have not yet heard of encourages them to then go and try them and must be avoided at all times. Information on scar reduction and preventing / reducing the risk of infection, however, are very much allowed and encouraged.
For example : "I find it works best when I do ...", "If you cut yourself on your XXX then even your doctor wouldnt see it" , “If I took X amount of pills – would it kill me?”.
I only do my arms if I;m desperate, but other than that I do my tighs, my shins, my back, my hips, my stomach, and some slightly more private places...
danger wise I gues near a vien/artery is worse, first aid wise near a vien/artery/bone/anywhere that the skin is tight/on a joint is bad, etc...
but in genral from a psychological perspective it's all SI so all equral
Hey guys - I just wanted to back up what Charlie / Squirrelspit said in her post, about making sure that you are very careful not to post content that may be "tip sharing" for other members reading your posts.
Posting a thread that asks people about the actual physical location on their bodies where they self harm, is not technically breaking the RYL Rules in itself .... but the actual responses to this question could very easily result in what we call "tip sharing" for other members, so its very important that you take a bit of extra care when posting replies to this topic.
The way we define "tip sharing" at the RYL website, is when members give out certain information that could result in teaching other members something new that they could use to cause themselves harm (or additional harm) .... or .... information that may give another person a false sense of security about their own physical well-being, whjen in reality, what is being discussed is potentially quite harmful.
So the sorts of information that may be revealed in this thread that could be seen by the mods as "tip sharing", are things like -
* mentioning that you self harm certain areas of your body that others may not have thought of, because they are "easy to hide"
(ie - if people learn about more places on their body where they are able to hide their cuts/ wounds, there is a greater chance that these people are going to self harm alot more, as they have less of a risk of being "found out" and their self harm being discovered)
* mentioning a unique area of the body that you self harm, and which could give another member the idea to self harm in that area.
* mentioning that self harming in certain areas of the body is very dangerous due to the location of vital blood vessels / organs etc
(this information could lead to imitation by other members who may be very suicidal or wanting to cause major harm to their bodies)
* on the flipside of my previous point, mentioning that self harming in some areas of the body is actually relatively SAFE because there are no important blood vessels, bodily organs etc located in that area
(this is that "false sense of security" that I mentioned earlier, as no form of self harm is 100% safe!)
* giving out detailed information about the physical location of where you self harm - eg - "I self harm on the very tip of my ring finger on my left hand .. just below where the nail sits and right before the last knuckle joint" .... as unnecessary detail of where you self harm is just like giving someone else a manual or a map of where to harm themselves, and its just not needed in a thread like this.
So those are just a couple of examples of what the mods may considered as "tip sharing" on a thread like this.
If you have any doubt at all about whether a reply you intend to post may be considered as tip sharing or not, then please feel free to PM any online forum mod (the red ones!) and perhaps send them a draft of your post or describe what you intend to post on this thread, and just ask them about it.
But I think as long as people are careful about what they post, and just take a monment to think about how another member might respond to their post, then I think this thread will be fine.

This.
Then I had to start wearing a short sleeved shirt to work so I started cutting somewhere else, but it didn't feel so effective there so I eventually stopped.
i think its all the same really, and its bad no matter where you do it really.
i started on my arms but now am migrating around my body. random i know!!
i think that there is no 'safer' place.
I cut on the back of my arms, and have done on upper arms and forearms before but have found that marks take longer to disappear so I stopped doing it there. I would never do it on wrists! I have also done it once or twice on hands because I had a desperate urge to cut when I was in school so I discreetly did it during class, but got too many questions so I wouldn't cut there again either.
