i came up with this on the mental health thread
i was saying how intelligence goes hand in hand with mental illness
i really do belive this and the more i wrote the more i wanted to post here cos more ppl would see it and read it and i didnt come up with it the person who wrote the thread did but im saying that its the intelligent ppl who get ill in the first place ... see??
like genius real geniuses most of them are autisitc like rainmain and that think about it ...
and a beautiful mind too as i mentioned b4 ,the more u know the more u meltdown ..u get me ???
its like the world doesnt want u to find out its secrets

Yeah it really does make a lot of sense...I mean the added pressure that comes not only with intelligence but with intellectualness and academic capabilities/expectations is immense.
I am sorry to say this, but I have to stay true to the psychology I am about to take an exam for. Intelligence & Mental Illness would exist in correlation, not causation. i.e. I highly doubt that being mentally ill makes you extra intelligent, or visa versa. I think it's all down to personal traits. Afterall, I'm no genius.
In fact. According to this, intelligent people are less likely to suffer a severe mental illness!
Of course there are those rare ones, demonstrated by movies like "Rainman", "Beautiful Mind".

I think it is related with genius! I'm glad I came across this thread as I was talking to my friend the other day about OCD and genius. :D
AND, most comedians suffer from mental illnesses (Lee Evans, for example?!)

We had this debate in a psychology lesson once and in the end my teacher agreed with me!

I was thinking there was going to be some scientific test or something but it's not. So what if i become dumb i no longer have a mental illness? in that case where do i sign on?
The fact is mental illness can affect anyone no matter how intelligent they are i have a mate who i wouldn't say he's the brightest of people who has a mental illness then you get those that have mass intelligence who also suffer. The thing is it can hit anyone no matter how intelligent you are.

I agree. But I don't think its a simple as that. This is clearly a multi-layered issue. Intelligence doesn't necessarily mean intellectuallity. What I'm trying to say that if a person can't do maths or is even illiterate, it doesn't mean that they're not intellegent. Intelligence comes in many shapes and forms.
Im not saying every person who is mentally ill is a genius to be exact

ppl who are extremely intelligent suffer tremendous pressure and usually fold under this pressure sometimes resulting in mental illness
i do believe Einstein had problems one way or the other and a lot of great minds also
it is very hard for the brain to function at high levels and to be normal at the same time ,this is also true for very creative ppl ,who also have breakdowns more often than the normal person in society ,this is a given
however i am not saying i am a genius but i do believe the fact that i am creative and have always been that way perhaps led me to breaking down

I totally agree. For someone to push limits in their brain that make them extra creative / intelligent means that they can't stay sane at the same time.
I think it depends on what mental illness it is too.

and i never said I was intelligent ,i said about those with exceptional ability who suffer mental illness
i do realise in sobriety that the title of this thread is misleading but it was meant to be light hearted
