After the local benefits office, in a building right across the road from my flat had been mismanaging my benefits for some months, I put a sign reading 'PAY UP!' in the windows of my flat. Along with my web address.
The immediate effect was that, according to the statcounter I was using, Add Free Stats, which had performed really well, until recently, dropped like a stone. One day fine, next, nothing. Bizarre! As though there was a sudden collective pang of guilt or worry about being caught among local watchers.
Then, it began to climb, successfully, as it still appears to be doing (problem _still_ not finally resolved).
Now, however, I routinely find that I get hits from everywhere _but_ Norwich on the map (click on the link at the foot of my home page - the satellite maps you can get by drilling down in that view with that system are fantastic!).
As far as I can tell, the signs in my window are more easily legible from St Helena, Fiji, and various other remote and obscure islands and other continents.
I'm guessing maybe there are a lot of people using anonymisers _or_ someone has mucked up Add Free Stats, which would be a crying shame!
Anyone have a clearer or more authoritative idea of what's going on?

they want to know if more people are going to the site because of the sign and if so is it because of where they are that the sign is more visible... or if its people using proxies or if the counter just failed epically.

how often is it updated? surely it would be more cost effective to get a satelite to beam down images than have planes fly past every day. if the sign is visible then it must have been updated soon after going up... coincidence?

If you can bounce high, bounce for her too,
Till she cry "Lover, gold-hatted, high-bouncing lover,
I must have you!"

'If in doubt, read the question!'
I think it may have saved a lot of students a lot of heartache, over the years!
I didn't mention Google Earth anywhere in my post.
The signs are in my windows. After putting them there, hits _dropped_. And now do not come from my local, but the middle of the ocean.
That said, there _is_ a satellite imaging function on the stats engine I use, at the foot of my home page. You can drill down to individual houses.
I think that what has happened is that the mapping function has gone wrong.
Which was what I was asking about.
Really gets annoying when you find fifty people forcing 'the discussion' downwards for no particularly useful reason. Tends to make you suspect motives.
No offence but I still have no idea what you are talking about. . .
