I like Starbucks :)
Same reason as Dreaming, it's the only place that seems to have s/f syrup. And their hazelnut lattes are yummy. And I ask for small. not tall. That sounds silly.
I don't think Starbucks is that overpriced? There's nowhere that I know of in the area that'd do coffee cheaper, at least, that tastes nice and does it cheaper. £2.00 for a coffee - that expensive?
Employee: Welcome to Starbucks. What will you want today?
Me: Mmmh, I'll have a small frappucino, I guess
Employee: A tall frappucino coming right up
Me: No!! I said "small", not "tall"
Employee: Here we call the small sizes "tall"
Me: Isn't "tall" kind of like the opposite of "small"
Employee: *chuckles*
Me: *sighs*
Later I found out that the medium sizes are called "Grande" (spanish for "big") and the large sizes are called "Venti" (I'm not sure but I think it means "twenty" in either french or italian). What happened to the good old days when coffee stores used direct, truthful names (small, medium, large) for their sizes, instead of vague, deceitful names? Also, $3.70 for a pretty average "tall" frappucino is a bit too much. I don't know how the hell this franchise became so successful.
And that was my first experience buying coffee at a Starbucks
venti has to b e italian
and were you awtching.. this

i've never been to Starbucks and never will for my own coffee as i don't like it =]
I adore Starbucks. I always get a Caramel Macciato (sp?). But, for some reason, despite the fact I know how to pronounce it, I always lose that ability whenever I come to tell the employee what I want >.<
we have a starbucks bit at work, the only reason i use it is because the coffee up stairs in crap.

Starbucks, and most coffee shops, suck. I don't mind doing all the sizes in italian, fine with me. Anything else is a no no. Tall is not small. Tall is more water.
And Crumple...
Did you critisize starbucks for putting too much milk in their espresso? Jesus H. Christ. I hope you didn't, because if you did... Wow. I mean, come on. Someone spot the mistake in that, srsly.
ALSO, if I asked you for an espresso ristretto, what exactly would you do? Answer correctly, and you earn my respect forever. Otherwise, well... Any bitching about starbucks is instantly invalid.

We have a Costa nearby so I go there automatically.
If I'm in town, I have a choice of... Costa, Starbucks, Cafe Nero, Cafe Rouge (or something?) and various little coffee shops and tea shops...
Oh, and two of the Starbucks in York are in lovely old buildings. One (near the Minster) is in some Tudor-style house, and the other is in what appears to be an old bank.

Either way, they're both really pretty.
And I stand by the fact that I really don't see them as overpriced. £2 for a coffee is fairly reasonable. On campus, a coffee is £1.50, and they aren't that great.

Well... I believe ristretto means short, no? So it would be a short shot with nothing else added. The way it's meant to be...
(I thought the espresso-with-milk thing was odd too - surely that's a latte?)

Close, extremely so. There's more to it than that. Something a good barista should manage to explain. I'm waiting for them to prove they can critisise by doing so

Venti is a made up word, made to sound italian and fancy. Next time you're in starbucks check it out, next to venti is a copyright symbol. Copyright starbucks. they made it up
Haha, I didn't know that, thankyou :)

It's £2.70 at all the Starbucks near me, yes that's expensive, for a cup of ****.

Please don't get me started on their caramel macchiato. I had an argument with a Starbucks worker when I asked for a macchiato and he was all 2Our caramel macchiato?" and I said "No, a normal macchiato" Then he went on explaining what a caramel macchiato was and all I wanted was a normal macchiato, then I got it served to me in a TALL mug, instead of an espresso cup. I was so annoyed.

I know about coffee, if I didn't I wouldn't be moaning about Starbucks so much. I don't really want your 'respect', so shove it.
I didn't say they put too much milk in their espresso. I simply meant their espresso to milk ratio in their coffees is so ****ed up. Too much milk. A cappuccino is meant to be served in a 5-6oz cup, (which you don't generally find in any coffee shops, although mine may start this soon, yay!) giving a ratio of espresso to milk as 1:4-5 (My shop uses 5.5oz)
The rule that cappuccinos are made by the rule of thirds is wrong. Although that is what you'll find in most coffee shops
If you asked me for an espresso ristretto, I'd give you one.

You are ****ing hilarious, why don't you come slum it down with the rest of us? :)
An espresso ristretto is a restricted shot of espresso. It's basically everything at the start of the pour then you stop it early. It is thicker, richer and bolder than an espresso, and there is less of it in volume. My friend once described it to a customer at work as "all the aspects of a good espresso, amplified" which I thought was pretty good.
If I'm making a coffee for myself I prefer to us a double ristretto instead of a single espresso, tastes nicer in my opinion :)
Hey, look at that. I know what I'm talking about :O
