I am currently:
Triggering (SI) - what can i do?

so i decided i want to stop cutting. i looked at other websites for advice. the main thing that they have is to tell someone that you trust. the only thing is i feel like i can't tell anyone. my parents will make me see a therapist(and no i'd rather not talk to someone like that). i have a feeling my best friend will be horrified. i need to get past this but talking to people i trust just does not seem like the right thing for me. i also know that talking to strangers won't help me either because i can always just shut off the computer. This is the year in my life when i am planning everything if i mess it up it will be harder for me later. i need another way out before it ruins my life completely.

HELP!

Hey,

It's great that you've decided you want to stop self harming - that's the biggest step of all.

It's understandable that you don't want to speak with a therapist but is there something in particular that bothers you about speaking with one? If it gets you through this difficult time so you can lead a healthy, self harm free like then it might be worth considering. However, if you really don't want to do that then you could speak to your parents and explain the situation, and that you don't want anybody involved.

I guess it is possible to stop self harming without speaking to anybody but it would be very tough because you've got nobody to talk with about what is going on for you and if you had an urge you would have to cope with it on your own. It is possible though so if that is what you choose to do then of course RYL is here to support you all the way!

There are a lot of things you can do instead of self harming. Some people find being creative helps them or doing exercise. You need to find what works for you but there will be something that really does help.

Best of luck,

Lotti

Why is it you don't want to see a therapist?
Even if you don't want to could you still talk to your parents and explain that you don't want to go down that route
Try lots of different things, it might take a while but see can you find something that helps you when you have urges to sh
Well done for making the decision you want to stop and good luck
xx

You're entirely bonkers. But I'll tell you a secret. All the best people are.

I'm not a fan of people going around talking about their SI per se. I think its better to talk about the things that underlay the SI. You've been upset by somethings and that's the issue imo. Telling people just about the SI can get them focused on the symptoms and not the roots and they make the psychic funk deeper. Of course sometimes if parents are cool and calm and dont over-react talking can be ok.

What are your reasons for not wanting to see a therapist? If you think you have got strong arguments for your decision then it would be worth talking to your parents still. I know it's very difficult, but it's just starting the conversation that feels impossible. Everything that follows is just so much easier. They are your parents, so they care for you and they will definitely try to support you. Even just that one conversation could already make life a lot easier for you.

There are of course other ways of coping, like drawing, writing, exercising or music, but more often than not they are insufficient and you just need someone who will listen to what you have to say and who will also talk back.

No matter what you decide to do, best of luck to you!
