People in Australia - Help please

Hey,

Basically next year I plan to go to Australia and do a self drive holiday and want your recommendation on places to go/things to see.

Also is it better to just concentrate on one area say east coast or try to go to more places but have less time there? This will probably be the only chance I have to go to Oz. I'll also then be flying on to New Zealand for a couple of weeks as well. So any recommendation for there will be good as well.

So yeah any suggestions on the best things to do???

Cheers xx

just so we no what sort of stuff are you in to? like would you like to see more scenery like uluru (the big rock thing if your wondering =) ) or are you more of a city person. either way id suggest the great ocean road down the east coast of aus quite nice.

I'm a Kiwi so I can help with the NZ side of things. How long you going to be in NZ for because that will make a big difference to how much you can see.

OK well that give you plenty of time then.

Cities you have to visit are Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown, Dunedin, Bluff, Wellington

Must Do's in Auckland
Go up the Sky Tower
Go to the Viaduct (not sure how to spell it, it the boat area)
Visit the Museum and the Zoo (this way you can see some NZ wildlife close up)

Christchurch (never been there)
Just look at the place I havent been there and dont know much about it

Queenstown
Same as Christchurch

Dunedin
Same as the two above, expect I know they have a awesom Castle there

Wellington (the capital city)
Visit the Bee Hive
Go to Te Papa
Go to the Harbour

In general, give the beaches a visit they are amazing. And if anyone says Kiora (key-or-a) to you, they are saying hello.

The Bee Hive sounds like it's something my mum might be interested in so I might get dragged along to see it anyway!
Mt Victoria sounds cool.

What sort of museum is Te Papa? Like what's it a museum of/about?

its quite a modern museum, to be perectly honest. Its a mockery of all musuems, as all if focuses on is the Maori culture and how they had nothing and stuff.
Its riduculas, but dont let me get started on that thing.
The rides are pretty cool though, theres like an under the sea and in the sky and its all video thingys and it feels like youre in it and yeah...
i think the sheep sharing one is still there too. you hav to see how fast you can sheer a sheep :p

cable car is quite nice, to the botanical gardens. Theres not relaly anything special but it looks all pretty :)
Thats all in wellington though.

The only other place i relaly know well enough i think is Christchruch.
They have the artic center.
And....you could go to sunmer and go to the beaches, there nice.
brighton beach

i think im all outta ideas.

Canberra is boring. Seriously boring. Unless you go to Questacon which is fun!

Screw mainland aus and come to Tassie! We're awesome!!!! Deepest natural harbour in the southern hemisphere! We also have some of the most beautiful scenery in the world! If you come here then i reccomend going to strahan and going on the gordon river cruise which is absolutely gorgeous!!!! Also in sydney the powerhouse museum is pretty funky!!!

I'm going to cooper pedy for my honeymoon! It's the opal capital of the WORLD! So that's pretty cool. Also it's mostly underground which is pretty darn funky!

If you do come to tassie, take the Spirit of Tas over and do a drive. You can actually drive around the whole island in 26 hours.... so you can see a few really ace sights in a couple days!!!! So come see us!

If you go to Uluru go to Kata Tjuta (the Olgas) I loved Uluru but thought the Olgas were more beautiful! And I had great fun in Byron Bay, although that was more for going out and surfing rather than scenery! I thought Sydney was a great city, lots to see and some great coastal walks as well.

Personally I thought New Zealand was a lot nicer than OZ but maybe thats because I saw a lot more there. My favourite places to go there would be The Caitlins, right at the bottom of the South Island, either the Fox or Franz Joseph Glaciers north of Queenstown - both were great and we did a glacier walk which I loved! Akaroa and Kaikora were both beautiful and you can go whale watching at Kaikora.

The arctic centre in Christchurch was really good although a little pricy if you're on a budget and Cadbury world in Dunedin was great fun!

On the North Island I really liked the geothermal parks at Rotorua (or however you spell it, I can't remember), Te Papa was an interesting museum but far too big for me and I got bored before I'd seen it all. And go zorbing - it was so much fun!

Te Papa is one of the big museums in NZ, it is really intresting and some of it is interractive, I can spend like a whole day there if I want to just looking at the stuff they got there. Despite what my other Kiwi here says it is not all about Maori culture and how they had nothing and stuff. Yes it does have a section on Maori history but it also has many other sections and is a nice place to visit.
