When I ask you to listen to me and you start to give me advice, you have not done what I asked.
When I ask you to listen to me and you begin to tell me why I shouldn't feel that way, you are trampling on my feelings.
When I ask you to listen to me and you feel you have to do something to solve my problem, you have failed me, strange as that may seem.
Listen!
All I asked was that you listen.
Not talk or do – just hear me.
I can do for myself, I'm not helpless.
I maybe discouraged and faltering, but not helpless.
When you do something for me that I can, and need, to do for myself, you contribute to my fear and weakness.
But, when you accept as a simple fact that I do feel what I feel, no matter how irrational, then I can stop trying to convince you and get on with understanding what is behind this irrational feeling.
And when that is clear, the answers are obvious and I don't need advice.
The irrational feelings make sense when we understand what is behind them.
Perhaps that is why prayer works for some people.
God is silent, and He doesn't give advice or try to fix things. He just listens and lets you work it out for yourself.
So, please listen and just hear me.
And if you want to talk, wait a minute for your turn, and I'll listen to you. [Anon]
Ok, i read this thread alot, so i thought i would comment.

Something that my assistant head said to me when i told him i wanted to give up. Dont know who its from though.
You're not fighting in a ring. There is no bell telling you when to start and stop, and the opponent in the other corner is not a guy with gloves on. It's you. And perhaps you're the scariest opponent of all. You know all of your weaknesses; know how to lose. Every time you get knocked down, you both lose and win, and the only person who cares whether you get up or not half wants you to stay down. But maybe this is easier than most fights. It's going to get easier, not harder, the more time that passes. It's between what you want and what you want more. You know you'll have setbacks, but it's your choice what happens next. Choose to fight!

Happiness is always a by-product. It is probably a matter of temperament, and for anything I know it may be glandular. But it is not something that can be demanded from life, and if you are not happy you had better stop worrying about it and see what treasures you can pluck from your own brand of unhappiness.
- Robertson Davies
From the film American Beauty:
It was one of those days when it's a minute away from snowing and there's this electricity in the air, you can almost hear it. And this bag was, like, dancing with me. Like a little kid begging me to play with it. For fifteen minutes. And that's the day I knew there was this entire life behind things, and... this incredibly benevolent force, that wanted me to know there was no reason to be afraid, ever. Video's a poor excuse, I know. But it helps me remember... and I need to remember... Sometimes there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it, like my heart's going to cave in.
- Ricky Fitts
I had always heard your entire life flashes in front of your eyes the second before you die. First of all, that one second isn't a second at all, it stretches on forever, like an ocean of time... For me, it was lying on my back at Boy Scout camp, watching falling stars... And yellow leaves, from the maple trees, that lined my street... Or my grandmother's hands, and the way her skin seemed like paper... And the first time I saw my cousin Tony's brand new Firebird... And Janie... And Janie... And... Carolyn. I guess I could be pretty pissed off about what happened to me... but it's hard to stay mad, when there's so much beauty in the world. Sometimes I feel like I'm seeing it all at once, and it's too much, my heart fills up like a balloon that's about to burst... And then I remember to relax, and stop trying to hold on to it, and then it flows through me like rain and I can't feel anything but gratitude for every single moment of my stupid little life... You have no idea what I'm talking about, I'm sure. But don't worry... you will someday.
- Lester Burnham
From the film Dead Poets' Society:
We don't read and write poetry because it's cute. We read and write poetry because we are members of the human race - and the human race is filled with passion. And medicine, law, business, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life; but poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for. To quote from Whitman: "O me! O life!... of the questions of these recurring; of the endless trains of the faithless... of cities filled with the foolish; what good amid these, O me, O life?" Answer. That you are here - that life exists, and identity; that the powerful play goes on and you may contribute a verse. That the powerful play *goes on* and you may contribute a verse. What will your verse be?
- John Keating
