Strike

My apologies to the mod team for posting this in the wrong area originally, the last thing I want is to waste your time deleting/moving posts x

In an attempt to make the point that we are against bullying, including online bullying of any kind, some of us who normally reside in room 4 will be visiting room 2 on a silent strike today. We do not intend to break any chat rules and know that our presence will not cause any problems to any chatters.

Our hope is that many will agree that bullying and targetting of others is wrong, damaging and although in this case takes place online, often has real-life impact on those affected and not only is un-supportive for recovery, it actually often causes serious mental health symptoms to become more prevelent for a time. I'm sure no one would want to be responsible for that kind of outcome, either online or in real life.

When I was a child I was told, if someone is crying its not a game anymore.
Are we grown up enough on this site to realize that yet?

So what will happen when you are all auto kicked for not saying anything? This whole thing is ridiculous.

Serious question: what will this achieve? I think we all know that bullying is wrong, and I just cannot see what this will do to help.

Why do these members not come forward in any one of the multitude of Chat threads and make their point? Or better yet, why not try to come up with ideas as to how to make Chat better for everyone?

I'm not sure I understand correctly. I get confused about silent strikes because I don't see how they convey any information/awareness. I find it especially concerning when the issue being raised is that of bullying or abuse, when victims often do feel silenced.
I wonder if there is a better way of using your voice to your advantage? Within rules, of course.
It's good that you're being proactive though.

So sitting there saying/doing nothing will do what?....

People have come forward in various chat threads and to those in authority and have been either ignored or deleted. Some have left after a good amount of time trying to convey their concerns because they have not felt heard.

I would like to think that a pure show of numbers of people making an appearance to state that they, too, have felt bullied on RYL chat will be enough to make some of thebullies aware of the affect they are having on others, and perhaps make some changes to their behaviour.

We are aware of auto-kicking and have made plans to avoid being auto-kicked, and I am sorry you feel the whole thing is rediculous, of course you don't have to join in.

Thank you for the reply re: being proactive, that is all I am hoping for.

can i just say... i have had, in the last 4 months.. ONE pm saying that someone felt they were being bullied, and it is a very confusing situation that i am still trying to fathom.. but the person that reported it, i have spoken to them already an have told them that i am keeping an eye on the member they reported until i can trip them up myself.

I am at a loss as to what else i can do. or the moderating team can do. I sit in chat a lot and very rarely see people expressing their opinions on how another person is posting is affecting them.

Perhaps instead of a silent protest, we could all arrange to all be in the same room and actually sit and discuss things. I know myself and Liv will be in chat at that time so the whole thing can be strictly moderated, it could be quite a productive chat?

Thank you CHarlie, that would quite possibly be VERY useful and helpful in making appropriate changes so as many users as possible feel safe and supported.

I have seen some posts saying that Chat is cliquey, and that people dislike the way Room 4 is sometimes referred to, but that is it.

Ive already made my feelings perfectly clear on this matter.

I would just like to say, I am sick and tired of people complaining that they have been ignored by myself or the rest of the team. It is pathetic. Not once have I recieved another PM saying 'hey liv, remember that thing I PMd you about, any chance of a response?' You have no idea how busy it is for me on RYL. I have over 50 unread PMs from the last 10 days. I cannot deal with everything at once, so you know what, sometimes you'll have to wait.

If you want to have a proper discussion about chat, feel free to talk to me. If not, have your silent protest but it will achieve nothing.

This makes it sound like all the bullying that is supposed to be going on is happening in room 2....cos we never gt people coming into room 2 saying please help, i couldn't get support in room 4...cos they were mean/ignored me etc....no, no never never.....

Exactly. Cant count the number of times Ive seen this happen.

You do realise youre making it sound like anyone who doesnt join in is some kind of either a.bully or b.ok with bullying. For the record, the people who arent striking are the ones who actually want to do something productive on RYL.

People seem to forget that chat mods have lives out of here, their lives/jobs/work/study/whatever come first, being a chat mod comes second. That is all.

I literally have no idea what's going on..are we having a discussion about bullying at some point? When? Are you going to confront 'bullies'? I'm not really sure what's happening. I wouldn't mind having a discussion, I know a lot of the 'Room 4 folk' have a problem with me and some of the people I converse with, but I do not believe that any one of us has been responsible for full on bullying. Taking the piss, sure, we do that. But not bullying.

I'm just a bit worried that if this is not handled in the right way and 'bullies' are accused with little or no evidence, it could cause unnecessary upset. And I for one don't think that some people on this website will be able to accept the fact that these potentially accused members did not mean offense or have actually been upset by those accusing them, just chosen not to make a mountain out of a molehill, which is possible for this whole situation. (I'm not saying it is, I'm just saying it's possible. As Charlie said, only one PM in the last four months about a member being bullied, why have you only just decided to 'strike' as opposed to PM a mod about it?)

I'm gonna tap him like a maple tree. I'm gonna search him for some syrups. I'm gonna be having sex with him.

can i just say also.. the person that was accused of bullying, is also a room 4 regular, not one of the general room regulars.

Im not sure about the others, but i will definitely be sitting in room 2 at 9pm, to try and moderate any discussions that do take place.

heckling and name calling will result in you being kicked though.

They are the same thing, unless people are 'taking the piss' in jest and the other person is in on it and aware it's not meant to be hurtful.

Stop thinking about what I want, what he wants, what your parents want. What do you want?

This strike idea seems to be a rash idea, if we want change we need to change the way we act not blame it all the mods, there is almost no one on the chat that can say that they havent been rude to someone else on here, so we can't expect the mods to play mommy and daddy, if we are mature enough to be on the chat we should be mature enough to be responsible for our own actions, and to atlest attempt to not fight with with other people and to act mature. alot of the time we arent even sending them the logs when we have an issue with something, so maybe we should be trying to improve our behavior before blaming the mods for not doing a good job, JS
