She had just turned thirteen, one of the most popular girls in the year, envied by others. Always smiling, bubbly and cheeky.
She hung herself in her wardrobe. Her mother found her the next morning when she went to wake her for school. An image that will forever be ingrained in her mind, one she will see every time she closes her eyes.
Yesterday the church yard was deadly silent as the hearse drew up. It was followed by the child's mother, clutching onto her husband. A sister and brother, lost in grief. And then followed her closest friends, bawling their eyes out, too young to fully understand all that had happened.
'She's never coming back.' A child had rocked back and forward as they told me how they felt the day before. 'I don't understand, she's never coming back. I'll never see her sitting in front of me in english again, she's really never coming back.'
At such a young age, or any age, you should never have to go through grief of this magnitude.
A child yet to learn the facts of what had happened said, 'Maybe she felt sick Mammy, maybe she felt sick so she went into her wardrobe and suffocated to death.'
I have held 5 children in my arms since Monday, each uncomprehending, each wrecked with grief. Yelling, screaming, breaking things or simply sobbing.
A family ruined. 180 children in her year grieving, relatives coming from all over the country. A town in mourning. Some are thinking along the lines of a glorified funeral.
What about the child who was best frineds with this girl? 5 months ago her older sister did the exact same thing. This young girl in question had clearly heard too many conversations of the technicalities. Did she even know how final it all was? Did she know what she was leaving behind? How many wrecked lives? Did she try to call out for help when it was simply too late?
The church was filled with grief. As I shook the hands of the family in question all I could see was simple defeat. As the priest had spoken you could hear childrens wails throughout the church. Young people clutching to each other for support. And very small children, friends with the girl, who simply couldn't get their head around what would happen. And will grieve for years to come.
Who can turn around and tell me that suicide really is the only answer?
Treasure the small things, enjoy those special moments, and let that kiss linger on your lips. Because it is these things that will warm you up on a cold Monday morning.
That's very powerful and you're right. However I do know a lot of people who really honestly believe that the people they care about would be better off without them, whether or not this is true and that it is selfish to be alive rather than selfish to die. There are questions about suicide that will never ever be answered because those who do cannot be asked why. All we can do is try and tell those people we care about, how much we care about them and that however bad they feel, life would be a worse place without them. Hugs, Hannah

THANK YOU.
I have recently lost someone very important to me through suicide and the effects after are devastating. Absolutely incomprehensible.
Such overwhelming sorrow from so many.
Suicide may take away one person's pain but it leaves the same pain in tenfold the amount of people and their grief is for life.
I've been through this with 2 familes and it's just squeezing the life out of them.
I do understand how people can be so low they feel this way I don't mean to sound like I don't, I just wanted to say thank you for sharing that.
It needs thinking about.
Made me cry! I've lost too many people this way! x

NO MATTER HOW BAD YOU FEEL - ONE NICE PM TO SOMEONE NEW A DAY HELPS!!! TRY IT!!!
This made me cry! It's the most selfish thing ever to suicide and I don't care how badly you're hurting, no one has the right to do that to others. There is ALWAYS a better way. Always :(
"Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind."
I understand how truly devastating suicide is to those around the individual, but I also understand truly feeling that people who know you don't really want you around and would appreciate you 'getting rid of yourself'. Now, I can see it from a different (better?) perspective and appreciate the pain it would have caused those who care about me.

Hope is the feeling you have, that the feeling you have isn't permanent. (Jean Kerr)
At my boyfriends funeral one of his friends said to me "Do you think he would have done it if he had known how many people would be here?"
Knowing the wake of pain that's left has always helped me hold on. Knowing how much it hurts, how traumatic it is for the person who finds your lifeless body has probably been what's kept me here through some of my darkest times. You may end your pain, but those you leave behind will be in unending agony.

This message was really powerful and I think something we need to keep posted on these forums.
Replying to bump it up again, I think re-reading those heartfelt words is something very imporant. Suicide leaves nothing but pain and destrtuction and it's s terrible thing to do to loved ones left behind.....I know, I supporting a family through this now and can only beg people to listen to this and to see what it does to people who are left behind.
There is ALWAYS another answer.
I've lost a couple of friends to suicide. My own father committed suicide when I was 4 years old. I tried to commit suicide about three times. It hits home.
