I think it's good.
If Tony Blair had pulled out of Iraq when he was still in office though, that wouldn't have been acceptable, he should have finished what he started. Instead he ran away from the problem.
But anyway, I think staying there will only cause more damage tbh.

But then again, it's like abandoning a country in dire need of some help.
Hmm.. it's complicated.

Right, in no way whatsoever did I agree with the war.
But I can see the reasoning for it.
We need the US on our side.
If you look at where the US have allies it's actually very interesting they're in one big oil line.
If there was to be a bigger war, the US could control pretty much all of the oil supplies in the middle east and beyond.
We are somewhat reliant on them.
If we get bombed and we didn't back them up, they'd be reluctant to help us.
I don't agree with pulling out the troops now because Iraq is in a mess and that's not just gunna go away because the soldiers go away.
Even if we were to withdraw there would still be american soldiers.
We've pretty much made a huge mess in Iraq and now our soldiers have got to stay there until we've cleaned it up.

Yes, but we need a PM with some balls to say NO to the Americans too. Tony became a walkover for Bush.

"We've pretty much made a huge mess in Iraq and now our soldiers have got to stay there until we've cleaned it up. "
I'm sorry, but I think it's better to acknowledge we've ****ed up and get out with some creditability (albeit almost none) and focus on our Country. The state of this Country has rapidly declined since we went to Iraq and it needs the full attention of those in power to fix it with full use of those powers we've given them. Simply adding pennies to pints of beer or splitting up the home office into security and justice departments will not solve the issues that matter to us and only us - not the Americans, us and I doubt that neither Brown nor Cameron can force the changes necessary.
Rant over.

In all fairness being ex army, i will happly say that the war in iraq is wrong. But i understand that i am not intitled to comment on these actions as we all have to just get on with it when you are in the army, you dont get a say as it is your job. Off that though i think we should pull out. I have lost a lot of close friends out there, and think that the war wont be won.

Is this thread actually allowed?

I'm in two minds about it, I don't think we should have been there in the first place but pulling out is just causing the iraqies more trouble isn't it? I don't think we should leave it in the state that it is in although I don't think soldiers should be out there getting killed either.

I am so ****ing sick of Iraq. I think we should get out of there just so people would shut up about it. I mean they are tearing themselves apart while we are there, so obviously our presence isn't helping. Though we'll be in Iran sooner or later no doubt if the US has its way.

To all those members who sent us Post Reports about this thread (thank you!) .... the Moderators are experimenting with a more lenient approach to political threads in the General Chat forum, to see if members can handle having a discussion about a political topic, without things descending into an all out war.

So please dont disappoint us guys!

Please could members send us more Post Reports if this thread does become argumentative or insulting between members.

But I've got very high hopes that the RYL community has matured alot within the last 6 months, and that things will stay polite and respectful on this thread.

Thanks everyone!

If they really are pulling our troops out then it is not a day too soon. We should never have gone in there.

Iraq was unstable yesterday. It is unstable today. It will be unstable tomorrow. It will be unstable in 20 years time regardless of how many of our troops live, fight, protect and die there.

It is like another Afganhistan. Another Vietnam. A war with no forseeable end.

I agree with you all.
It's unfortunate that they can't run their own country. But that isn't our problem, and we shouldn't be MAKING it our problem.

Well when people say it isnt our problem thats not exactly the case. We did invade that country (under false pretences too, wmd and all that) and kill their leader, even though he was a murdering dictator who supressed his own people. But we did kind of make it our problem as soon as we went to war with Iraq back in 2003.

Though I still think we should pull our troops out, leave the americans too it and all, especially seeing as now the fighting in afghanistan has got much worse.

Sorry, what? What makes Iraq a 'crappy' county and thus in your eyes not worth helping just because it was abused by a dictatorship for a couple of decades?

I agree in principle; we should never ever have gone in there, but now we're there, we can't just abandon them. If we do that, then the whole country will almost definitely break out into a messy civil war. There's no easy solution to it, but leaving them at this stage is not the answer.

im a bit of a pacifist, and personally i think the iraq war is one of the most selfish in history. the reason britain went to war was to kiss the ass of george bush and at the same time get oil, at the expense of thousands of peoples lives.

war was not a necessity, especially for britain to join in.

i really hope brown at least thinks about it, or possibly conduct a vote.

Ok thing is if we leave Iraq in the state it is we'll have failed to make it the peaceful democracy that we claimed we wanted it to be. We in some sense will make our country seem weak and not stick to its goals...

Yet if we dont pull out more of our soldiers are going to die in a war no one will appreciate thier efforts in fighting in anyway.... plsu we need that country to be stable because of the oil it provies, and whatever anyone says, we need oil.

Ack, really we may moan about politicians but they're jobs arent easy.

Greetings from the U.S. Yeah this topic's title isn't about the U.S. really but it's become about Iraq so here's some thoughts

Even when they said there were WMD's in Iraq, I had my doubts about going there. And since then I've been pretty critical of the whole thing, including it dragging down our economy.

Anyway, everyone knows that our (everyone's) troops will all have to leave the country eventually, and that'll be terrible for the country. But that's like taking E and complaining about the fall afterwards (only there's no original high). A timeline seems the best way out to me. That would give our (everyone's) generals a deadline to finalize training Iraqi troops, helping their gov't along, etc., to try to not tank the conclusion to this war too badly. And this needs to be soon, it's not likely the death total will start falling in a few years. As far as non-U.S. militaries, it sure helps for every bit but if you really want to pull out it's hard to blame you ya know?

Of course you want the U.S. on your side but you should really think about what you're doing instead of just pandering. We won't suddenly hate you for not joining up, especially if the war does turn out to suck like it does now. If there is a legitimate reason to dislike a war - outside of soldiers fighting and dying and economic damage (like 'I like this war but eh, you do it') - in the long run the U.S. wouldn't think any differently of your country. Especially if you consider how we always have people on both sides of the aisle in any war. I mean just.. stop being pushed around so much you're being paranoid!

Our political system is almost certainly about to be taken over by the Democrats (generally Democrats = against war; some Republicans = for war. Obviously everyone's thinking about leaving but more Democrats are looking to kinda gtfo right now). Both houses of congress are Democratic and everyone believes the Democratic candidate will win the race in 2008 (not that Republicans are looking for a new war either). So. Maybe if oil runs out and the world does start warring with itself but Iran is pretty much not happening, we don't want a second Iraq.
