ECT? (electro-convulsive therapy)

basically my mood has hit rock bottom at the moment and things arent getting better, my psych talked today about me having ECT, I know a bit about it as my friend has had it a couple of times.

Has anyone had it? Can you tell me what is involved (more before and after, I know what they do during, if that makes sense). Did it work for you?

Going out of my mind any help would be hugely appreciated.

I'm sorry to hear that things are so difficult for you right now, why does your psych think that having ECT might be an option? It's a good idea to make sure that you have tried out other types of therapy first. I haven't had it myself but MIND has a comprehensive information leaflet about it. Perhaps you could talk to your friend about how they found it? I really hope that things get better for you soon. Take care.

I put it down on paper and then the ghost does not ache so much.

Personally honey i wouldnt have it done but it has helped and can help others from having a quick read of the above links. Ask your psychologist for more informationh about it since he was the who suggested it.

thanks for the replies guys.

It's not something that I would take lightly, and it's been mentioned to me before as an option, so I do know a fair bit about it. I would be given more information if I decided to go through with it. Thanks for the information though, muchly appreciated.

My psych suggested it because right now my mood is so low, any extra medication would take a relatively long time to kick in and something really needs to change right now if that makes any sense. We're kind of running out of options. I know he wouldnt suggest it lightly so I'm considering it.

I guess I was wondering if people have any personal experience with it?

Sorry this makes me sound like I've been pressured into it or that I dont understand the risks and what is involved, I do understand, just not writing too clearly right now.

Ask him lots of questions if you dont understand something. Is hospital not an option? Would it take a while for an increase in medication to work?

thanks andrea and trace

Hospital is an option, one that I'm not keen on but it may come to that. If I had ECT it would be as an IP.

Meds would take time to kick in, which is why he suggested ECT. I will think about it and ask him if I decide its something I want to try.

I'm just at the end of my tether. Called lifeline twice tonight, they didnt help very much, I just dont know what to do.

Yeah i think they dont do it while you are conscious anymore, they put you out until its done then wake you up. Honey call your hospital triage and talk to them.

Hey,

I have had ECT three times, and by that i mean three sets of 24 sessions. Was it helpful? Yes, it managed to bring me out of a deep depression the first two times i had it but the last attempt did nothing.

There are disadvantages to it tho. The effects of it only lasted for five weeks at the most. The girl who was having it the same time as me had this happen aswell
Also you feel really lousy the days that you have it (obviously from the anasethetic) and i was having three sessions a week.
Also i suffered terrible memory loss, there are large chunks of my memory that i just cant remember, I have even accussed my partner of making stuff up (such as movies or places we have been/seen etc)

This is my experience of it... but the decision is up to you. All i know is i would not subject myself to that again. ANd the main reason for this is because for five whole weeks i felt ausume, Life had meaning again, I didnt struggle to get out of bed and I felt so good. It only hurt more to be plummeted back into depression. Because now i have 'know' how i am meant to be feeling and i cant get it back, no matter how much medication or therapy i have.

Sorry to make this sound so depressing, ECT may be right for you, just wanted to share my experience. You can PM me if you want x

I have had ECT and wrote about my experience on my blog. If you're interested in reading about it, it can be found here:
http://thereandbacktoseehowfaritis.b...ht-on-ect.html

It really turned things around for me - I'd have it again if I was desperate.

I've had ECT, it's not half as bad as films etc would have you believe, I will come back and post a wee bit more later

all I would say is take internet resources with a pinch of salt, there's a lot of bad press, and extreme opinion on ECT
