Becoming a Healthcare Assistant

I just had two days' training to become a healthcare assistant. I payed nearly £200 for this so I can't bail out now.

The forms they gave me to fill in ask for a medical history. Two of the questions on this form are:

- Have you ever self-harmed?
- Have you ever had or have a mental illness or a mental breakdown that has required treatment?
- If you have answered YES to any of the above please provide details.

I have self-harmed and as you know I have schizophrenia.

Shall I lie on this form? I am really inclined to lie because I honestly don't think they'll take me on if I say "self-harmed on several occasions and suffer from schizophrenia which has required hospital treatment" or something along those lines.

Will they find out about my sections (2 and 135)?

PM me if you want a PDF copy of the ICD-10 or the Mental Health Act 1983/2007. I ALSO HAVE THE DSM-V BOOK and am a pharmacology student.

I have a visual impairment / neurological problems so I need people to type in clear text and no funny fonts. Also excuse any typos, my vision blocks things out.
I have autism and have problems communicating, PMs included.
Just becasue I type well doesn't mean I speak well. I am only part time verbal.

I think it is best that you are honest on the form. Because if they do find out, itll work against you. Thats just my advice though. xxx

I asked the HTT and they said that it would be ok to tell the truth.

PROBLEM is, is that my Mother is writing the form for me (my handwriting is illegible) and she will not accept telling the truth because she is ashamed of my illness and tries to hide it as much as possible.

If you lie on the form and it comes to light at any stage, you would not only be jeopardising your current job but also all future employers/ universities you are applying for. You have to be honest, simple as. They cannot use it against you, what they must do is establish whether or not the job will put you at risk and whether the patients are at risk from you.

I hate to tell you this, but I was rejected from a HCA position last year on the grounds of occupational health. They had offered me the job, but the occ health told me they were concerned that it could impact my health negatively. However it does depend on individual circumstances and by no means am I saying you cant or wont get the job. It is just absolutely essential that you are entirely honest with them.

Ok, I'll tell my Mum that I researched and found that it is bad bad bad to lie, and I will cross my fingers that they won't reject me a position.

Thanks. I hope this works.

Be honest, definately.

Im not sure if sections show up on police records but you should have to have a CRB check.
I got through occ.health to work in a pharmacy even though they knew id OD'ed in the past. I did tell a little white lie about the last time id self-harmed. The occ.health doctor examined my scars and questionned about how recent one looked. They werent convined and wrote to my gp. My gp had always supported me in getting a decent job and she wrote positive stuff that convinced them to let me work.

HI

Im a qualified nurse and I admitted to depression and self harm on my OHS form . I was called in to see the doctors at OHS about it and they were really supportive about it all and i had no problems being passed as fit to work . I imagine that OHS will want to "review" you and if your mum doesnt tell the complete truth then maybe you could tell the doctors yourself at your appt ?

Hope that makes sense.

I will try my best not to lie on the forms. I'll tell my Mum that lying could have bad consequences and hopefully that will win her over. She has a very negative view of my illness.
Thanks everyone. I'll talk to my doctor about it.

maybe if your mum insists on lying you could write a covering letter on the computer?

Perhaps you could get a friend to fill the form out with you?

And I was a healthcare assistant for a year back before I started college, it's a pretty interesting job.

I'm gonna step up here and play Devil's Advocate a little bit, don't hate me, please. *blushes* But suppose I go to the dr's and have to deal with a healthcare assistant in some way. Suppose this aforementioned healthcare assistant is actually in a full blown psychosis because he/she's forgotten (or is refusing) to take his/her medication. I think my reaction would be: how could they ever hire such an unstable person? Problem is, schizophrenics are unpredictable. And you're dealing with human beings, human beings with problems (or else they wouldn't go to a healthcare practise setting) I think you should be very careful and carefully examine who to hire. I, as a 'boss' would, at least.

I don't mean to say that schizophrenic (or otherwise mentally ill people) could never work in such settings but I think a lot of guidance and support will be needed. Therefore it is even more important not to lie on that form.

Marte

I'll ask my doctor about the form and perhaps even get him to write a note if needed. Just to get out of this stupid bureaucracy and avoid being sacked. My diagnosis is a LIE. Fred, Alex, John and the Woman are my friends. They are not evil figments of my imagination that are out to get me or whatever. But I'll write it on the form just to make the occupational health people happy. I have been chosen to have these friends and I trust them. They say "don't take the meds" so I won't, because I trust them.
